11mo rolling over and sitting up constantly when being put to bed at nigjt

My 11mo LO was a very late roller, he crawled and pulled up before he realised he can roll! So odd!

Anyway, he figured out he can roll onto his front and get onto all fours in his cot. He hasn’t even rolled back the other way yet !

I lay him back down on his back and he continues repeatedly to roll back onto all fours. He doesn’t know how to lie down from this position so just crawls around his cot all tired and droopy, head butting the bars then crying. He also pulls himself up onto knees holding the top of the cot

He gets very upset when I continue to lay him down and it makes me feel guilty.
it took an hour for him to fall asleep tonight doing this over and over.

Im not for CIO or sleep training. If left him to cry and figure out how to lay down, he would injure himself on the bars of the cot.

Anyone able to share some wisdom? I know it’s going to be worse when he can stand!

Unfortunately, he will be as frustrated as you are. His brain will be practising the skill without his active input into the process. It's like when you start a new job and dream about it. His brain is embedding the new skill by practising it when it has opportunity and it will be so focused on the skill that he won't know how to get himself back down and he'll feel frustrated and tired. They even do it when half asleep.

All you can do is keep gently lying him back down and soothing him in any way that works. It'll pass.

@ShowOfHands thank you for your reply. That makes sense as he has done it during the night when half asleep and looked confused how he got onto his knees when I go to see to him, bless him. Hopefully it will pass soon when he gets over the new skill haha

I had this after my baby took their first steps - suddenly they wanted to pull up in the bed and run around while in their sleeping bag(!). It lasted about ten days of difficult bed times, we made bed time 15 minutes later and did LOADS of walking practice. I think maybe doing extra tummy time might help your LO work out how to roll to back a bit sooner, and then the phase will pass and you'll be on to the next thing...

Yeah, they do that! They’ll stop in a bit… and start walking / talking / whatever is next instead.
