Trapped wind overnight - can’t cope anymore

Desperately need some advice for my 13 month old.

He was always a windy/colicky baby but it got better around 5/6 months. Over the last couple of weeks he’s started getting really bad trapped wind overnight which is waking him up and making him impossible to settle. The last couple of nights I’ve been up with him for hours at a time. I’ve been awake since 3.30am now and my alarm goes off in half an hour for work.

He was fed on expressed breast milk with the occasional formula top up but since he turned one we’ve started introducing cow’s milk. He’s always been absolutely fine with dairy and he’s fine during the day so I’m reluctant to believe it’s dairy intolerance. I’ve been trying to wean him off night feeds by giving him watered down breastmilk that was working until this wind started up. He’s also had antibiotics recently which have obviously had an effect on his stomach but I was hoping that now he’s finished the course that would settle but no sign yet.

I’m getting really desperate for a solution. I have PND and am still under the perinatal mental health team and the sleep deprivation is destroying any progress I’ve made with therapy/medication, I’m struggling to sleep before he wakes up as I’m anticipating it. I reckon the last couple of weeks I’ve averaged 3/4 hours sleep per night and I just can’t cope anymore on top of work.

Anybody any words of wisdom?

Are you sure it's not the milk causing it because my little one has CMPA and this is what he was like. It wasn't instant.

I guess it could be potentially but it doesn’t really explain how he’s been fine from 6-12 months(ish) only for this to flare back up over the last few weeks. He’s been having dairy fairly consistently since we started weaning (yoghurt everyday, cheese etc) and been fine. I’m wondering if maybe it’s a timing thing and the milk at night is an issue as he’s not on the move so getting things moving.

He also has an umbilical hernia which I’m wondering might be contributing to it.

Mine can have alot of dairy products now but still can't have milk. It's very rich so it could be that his stomach accepts cheese, yoghurt etc but can't handle milk

That’s a good point, maybe we’ll try a dairy free alternative at bedtime and see how that goes?

It could be the antibiotics have messed with his microbiome causing a temporary lactose issue. I’ve known a few children experience the same after a vomiting bug due to a similar effect. It could be worth trying some probiotics with him?

Another good suggestion - thank you.
