Hi, does anyone have a company they recommend for wood window shutters? I need something to cover the windows in my kid’s bedroom, they can’t sleep because of the light. Thanks in advance.

Wooden shutters aren't good for blocking out the light entirely, i find. Better with blackout curtains or blackout blinds.

I chose Shutterly Fabulous, because they come out to measure up and install them for you at a later date. You would, however, have to check that they covered your area.

There is another company called California Shutters, but you would have to measure up and fit the shutters yourself.

Although I have solid shutters, the PP is right in saying that you would still need blackout curtains over them, as light still comes in through the folds of the shutters.

They’re not even close to blackout. My kids have them and are fine because they’ve always had them so are used to it but their rooms are pretty light in the mornings. If yours need blackout then rethink and go for curtains instead.

I used to sell high end wooden shutters (Thomas Sanderson). Shutters won’t give you blackout or anywhere close. Look at pleated blinds (blinds2go are fine). Perfect fit duo shade will work well (am just about to order some for my bedroom)

We have shutters with room darkening blinds from Plantation Shutters and they're fantastic. Really good service they came straight to us to measure and great installation!

Another business named California Shutters exists, but you'll need to take measurements and install deer adventure the shutters on your own.

Hi there — excellent thought to use wooden shutters in a child's bedroom, they do an excellent job of blocking light and look nice as well. Following are a few UK companies that I think you might want to consider + a few tips on what to look for so you get something that will perform well for you and your child.
UK Companies to Consider:

California Shutters — bespoke wood or real hardwood or "perfect fit" versions; good reputation.
The Shutter Store — extensive range including natural hardwood and faux wood, with rapid turnaround.
Plantation Shutters Ltd (London) — good bespoke wooden shutter service.
Woody's Shutters — beautiful craftsmanship, ideal for bay or special windows.
Shutterly Fabulous — they provide a free survey, measure & fit, and usually have good bedroom finishes.
What to Check / Ask For:
Real wood vs fake wood: Real wood typically appears prettier and is warmer, although fake wood or painted wood can be more durable or easier to clean.
Light-block features: If your child wakes up due to light, inquire if the shutter louvers close securely, or if solid panels or tier-on-tier types are offered for better darkening.
Good fit & sealing: Small cracks allow light in, so measure with care, or have a professional survey carried out.
Safety features: If it has cords or small components, ensure child‐proofing or consider cordless models.
Warranty and aftercare: Wood warps or stains with age, so good warranty/service is essential.

@gardenmom as this thread has been resurrected, you need cassette roller blinds for complete black out. The best known brand is Bloc Blinds. There are others and similar systems. Basically the top of the roller blind is in a box that fits snug to the top of the window aperture and tight to the sides. There are side channels that the edges of the blinds are encased in so no light seepage at all.

Here is a video of them in action rather than a link to their website but if you are still looking this might be the solution.

In the North West I can recommend Taylor Wilson shutters. Nice small company who charge less than the big firms and do a fantastic job. They’ve done most the windows in our house and always been reliable and easy to deal with.

For a child's bedroom where light is an issue, I'd highly recommend custom Plantation Shutters. Their wide, adjustable louvers give you complete control over light and privacy, allowing you to pitch them for air flow or close them fully for near-total darkness. They are also incredibly sturdy and easy to clean, which is perfect for a kid's room.
My company, Home Direct Blinds, specializes in high-quality interior shutters. We offer free in-home consultations to measure your windows and bring samples so you can see the perfect fit and finish. You can view our full shutter collection to get ideas on our website.
I'm happy to answer any other questions you have!

When selecting a company for wood window shutters, especially for light control in a bedroom, here are the key factors to prioritize:

  1. Custom vs. Stock: For effective light blockage, custom-made shutters are essential. They are built to the exact measurements of your window, minimizing gaps where light can enter. Stock options rarely fit perfectly enough for total darkness.
  2. Material and Construction: Look for companies that use solid hardwood (like basswood or poplar) rather than composite materials. Solid wood is more durable, warps less over time, and provides better insulation. Ask about the finish; a high-quality, multi-step paint or stain finish is crucial for longevity.
  3. Light Control Features: Specifically inquire about options for maximum light blockage. This includes:
  4. Tilt Rods: A continuous, solid tilt rod on the front of the shutter panels often provides a better seal than hidden rear-tilt mechanisms.
  5. Bi-Fold or Track Systems: For wide windows or doors, ask if they offer specialized hinging systems to ensure the shutters close tightly in the middle.
  6. Professional Measurement and Installation: The quality of the installation is as important as the product. A reputable company will insist on sending a professional to measure your windows themselves. Improper installation can create light leaks and affect operation.
The most reliable approach is to obtain quotes from several local specialists who emphasize custom craftsmanship. Verify their expertise by asking for a portfolio of previous shutter projects and details on their warranty. I've had a good experience with Parisian Window Treatments. They offer a wide range of window shutters and provide professional measuring and installation to make sure they work effectively for light control. It would be worth getting a quote from them. Hope that helps your kids get a better night's sleep
