He will only go to sleep on his side or tummy. If I leave him for 30 mins I can roll him back onto his back, but otherwise he howls. For HOURS. Then when he wakes at 2 and 5 he does the same. I know cot death is a real threat, but what do I do? Am getting worried I will fall asleep before I can turn him and I am SO TIRED.

A Baby on their side is still safe, there are special supports you can buy ,but basically you can roll a sheet up,stick it under the bottom sheet to keep them from rolling back onto their tummy, but to be honest if they can "roll" themselves forward at 2 months its likely he's able to turn his head sufficiently for there to be no risk. Many babies sleep on their tummies and there doesnt seem much you can do.

His neck is freakishly strong. He holds it up from lying on his tummy for a full minute. Always moves his head from side to side and usualy folds hands under chin to sleep. Odd boy.

The only worries apart from the Cot Death side of things, when they lay on their tummies is being "smothered".But no baby that can move his neck and head to that extent is unable to allow enough room to breathe, and he would turn his head to the side anyway. With his hand under chin as well,I'd say try not to worry,it seems he is coping ok on his front. As long as all the other "risks" are dealt with such as being in a smoke free atmosphere, not over heating etc.I'd say the risks are minimal.I realise that we are told to lay babies ontheir backs, but when i did my paediatric nursing,I was always told to put babies on their tummy, and although I wouldnt dispute the evidence,I'd say in your case the risks are minimal.

Whoops forgot to say,I did my Paediatrics in 1984,so I appreciate the advice is different now, but.....

I'm a paranoid first time mum and just got an Angelcare monitor (sound and movement monitor). Why don't you get something similar for a peace of mind and just let him sleep on his tummy? GL!

I know it's against all the advice but my LO wouldn't sleep on her back either and had a very strong neck from early on so I have put her to sleep on her tummy from about 6wks onwards and she's been a really good sleeper (until recently but I think that's to do with teething). Do what you think is right.
