Not about DS's sleep about MINE... are you like this or am I alone?

I take (non addictive) sleeping tablets prescribed by my doctor to help with chronic insomnia. (I have thyroid problems) I also sleep with a black satiny eye mask (in the early hours of the morning because I can not sleep with any light coming through the curtains)

I also have to sleep with a small fan on my bedside table on but pointing at the ceiling. Well if its hot I do point it at my face but usually its pointed at the ceiling.

Other than that I think I am a fairly normal person!!

Am I alone in being high maintenance sleep wise or are there other neurotic Mums out there?

I need sleep now I read it as you have a small frying pan that you point at your face if hot

eenybeeny · 18/05/2008 23:58

For some irritating but unknown reason, I have to be the last person to go to sleep in the house. We pretty much constantly have visitors of one sort or 'nother, and no matter how exhausted I am, I know I am doomed to lie in bed till sometimes 2 am till all are asleep. anyone else?

eenybeeny · 20/05/2008 22:26

thats pretty much as weird as me needing a fan pointing at the ceiling! What a PITA for you!

I know someone who HAS to fall asleep on the sofa with the tv on then after a couple of hours of that she moves into her bed.

Moonlight wakes me up.

Good lord, my dh can snore the roof off the house! (yawn) If not that, he sometimes gets the sleep apnea thing where I find myself listening for and counting between his breaths-so I jab him in the ribs. yawn yawn.

Then the new baby arrived (11 wks)...
The ironies of life:
She was in the bassinet on one side of me and dh was in bed on the other side of me: I was trying not to hear dh's wide range of nocturnal noises while straining to listen to hear dear baby breathe. [zombie emoticon]

Thankfully, I'm a SAHM and can have a power nap occasionally.

eenybeeny · 24/05/2008 00:51

lordy. I dont envy you toomanystuffedbears!! That is awful! You should get an eye mask like mine so the moonlight doesnt bother you! And tell your DH to see a doctor! Unless he already has? There are supposedly some really good treatments for snoring and sleep apnea. My eye mask is lovely its black satiny and is sort of stuffed with soft stuff and smells of lavender.

My bodyclock is buggered from doing shiftwork and having 2 littlies and a poorly dh.I am a terrible insomniac!!

expatinscotland · 24/05/2008 01:05

i'm an insomniac and just about anything will set it off.

i have to sleep in full dark with white noise.

right now, i have sinusitis and one side is bunged up.

so the second i lie back, i start up with a panic attack.

if and when i fall asleep, i wake up in a panic attack because i cannot breathe well through my nostrils.

i am pregnant so can't take my diazepam or tempazepam and it sucks.

expatinscotland · 24/05/2008 01:07

i have a mask from Magellan travel that is EXCELLENT.

i don't have to use it out here, this is a rural area and plenty dark.

but i have it in my dop kit at the ready for anyplace we travel.

TheMadHouse · 24/05/2008 01:10

I am an insomiac too. I take quetiapine, but at the m oment it is not working.

I have tried diazapan, but the consultant is not keep on putting me on anything addictive. also tried another, but can not remember the name.

I also can not sleep with a stuffy nose as I breath though it, so keep waking up with a start, which is really scarey.

I was fine until I got pregnant the first time and then it all went completley down hill.

Not only can I often not get to sleep, but I also can not stay asleep

TheMadHouse · 24/05/2008 01:11

We have blackout blinds and no lights on at home. DH has got used to my strange noctuernal stuff and often wakes to find me not in bed

eenybeeny · 24/05/2008 13:14

expat you can take phenargan (sp??) while you are pregnant. I take it almost every night, I am trying ttc DC2 and my consultant says its non addictive and safe in pregnancy. Ask for the 50 mg though the 25 isnt quite enough. My weird fan thing sounds better now that I think of it as white noise!

thanks so much, eeny. i finally took some Piriton syrup to try to get some damn sleep.

i'm going to see my GP next week about the insomnia. i'm on sertraline, which does pretty well for me, but these panic attacks are the result of the clogged up sinuses.

i'm well knackered tonight, though, so here's hoping.

expatinscotland · 24/05/2008 20:41

sounds like me, TheMadHouse. my insomnia was doing okay, till I was pregnant with DD2 and got chronic sinusitis and it totally went out the window!

i've never been the same.

have lots of trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep.

eenybeeny · 25/05/2008 15:49

sleep is a bugger isnt it. My DS is really ill at the moment so I am just sleeping a few mins at a time and really lightly. Phenargan is also used for allergies so it might be really good for you expat! I hope it goes well when you see your GP. I get panic attacks as well as well as night terrors its awful.

meglet · 25/05/2008 19:55

I used to sleep really well when I used ear plugs, but can't these days as I have to listen out for DS. I need my blackout curtains too, and the room has to be warm. I do sleep well if I have really exhausted myself at the gym though.

NigellaTheUndomesticGoddess · 25/05/2008 20:02

I have troube getting off so lie awake for hours. when i do get off i have an active sleep life.
I talk.

I walk

I regularly find myself getting dressed

I wake wearing something different from what i went to bed in

i find myself in other rooms

i wake screaming and can't remember why.

Dh has found me plugging in the iron

The DDs have inherited it - they regularly appear downstairs - hold random surreal conversations then trot back to bed.

DD1 still has night terrors that rouse the neighbours.

It's great fun in our house

eenybeeny · 26/05/2008 20:08

I dont sleep walk but do talk a lot and scream and freak out generally! Turning on the iron is a scary one!!! I think I'd like to stay overnight at your house!

I had absolutely terrible insomnia when i was pregnant the first time, hardly had a wink of sleep for around half the pregnancy and of course not much after DD was born.

I think the whole experience has left me with some sort of PTSD about getting enough sleep. I find myself almost panicking if have gone to bed late and know i will only get x amount of sleep that night as DS wakes up at around 6.30 every morning.

I think the 'PTSD' is slowly getting better, but when i think about how well i slept before i had the DC's, how much energy i had upon waking (instead of just about managing to drag myself out of bed like i have to do now) I am amazed at how my sleep seems to have permanently changed for the worse .

The DC's don't normally wake in the night, and the earliest they wake up is around 6.30 which is not too bad, but I never ever seem to wake up feeling refreshed and like I've had enough sleep. In my pre-DC days, I used to voluntarily get up at 6.30am to go for a run!!!!!!

Sorry for the ramble, this thread struck a chord as I'm sitting here at 3pm wishing I could crawl into bed and go to sleep!

welshmum · 29/05/2008 15:12

Oh this is a reassuring thread.
I currently have an eye mask and ear plugs to get some kip. The ear plugs seem to let me hear the dcs but cut out any activity on the street which always wakes me up.
The combination of shiftwork in the past and the children and a dh who doesn't so much snore as make instrumental noises with his nose has absolutely done for me.
When I do get 7 or 8 hours it's like a drug....the best feeling in the world.

eenybeeny · 29/05/2008 22:27

it is nice to know I am not the only one who is dysfunctional!
