3 month baby doesn't sleep much

My baby boy is not a fan of sleeping. I work to get him to take short cat naps in the day, and longer naps in pram and car seat. At night he usually goes for 6 hours and then that is it. He won't sleep at all for the next 2 hours, and only short sleeps after that. He's perfectly happy during this period (cooing, smiling, kicking about). I'm knackered but my husband is helping me by taking him for a couple of hours before work so I can sleep a bit more.

He averages about 10 hours a day. Is this ok? Will it affect his development? He seems perfectly well, though he is a little dot, on 2nd centile but putting on weight steadily through combi-feeding.

My DD1 was the same. Short naps in the day. Cluster feeding at night and didn't sleep for long periods. We struggled with breast feeding and I was so worried about her development. She was at the health visitor clinic every week but they weren't concerned. She's now a fantastic, bright 8 year old and one of the tallest in her class. Some babies just don't seem to need loads of sleep (sadly for a tired mummy).

Babies don’t usually settle into a “routine” until 6 months or more, so this is all normal stuff. When he wakes, is he happy? If he is, he’s probably sleeping enough, especially if he’s putting on weight and is generally active and cheerful. I used a dummy for mine and he slept really well with it, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. These first months are really tough. Do try to at least lie down and close your eyes when he naps so there’s a chance you’ll catch a few winks, unless he’s one of those who needs the pram rolling along! If he is, maybe try one of those Rockit things? You’re doing great Mama. Raising a healthy happy baby is a huge achievement, so well done you.

Tbh I don’t think 6 hours is too bad at that age - can you not go to bed with him and then at least you have a 6 hour block? My LO was still waking every 2 hours at that age

This is reassuring thank you. I can deal with the low sleep so long as I am not constantly worrying it is harming him! He seems happy enough

Yeah I go down as soon as he does so I get the initial stretch. Then I usually feed and cuddle him for the next 3/4 hours during which we might get another 45 mins..then my husband takes him around 7am and I sleep till 9. So I get just about enough sleep...it's more worrying how it affects him

Getting a 6 hour block is impressive , I was still up every hour at that age with both of mine , just go to bed at the same time and you’ll have plenty of rest .

He does seem happy, yes, apart from sometimes having trouble with wind.

He definitely needs the motion to sleep but we are working on it. He has a dummy which helps a bit but he will suck on it awake too with his wide saucer eyes staring into my soul 😅
