17 month old sleeping long after calpol

Hi All,

I am really worried now.

My toddler has been unwell recently and so the last dose of calpol I gave him was today at 6pm. At 6.10pm he fell asleep. He awoke at 7pm and I breastfed him and thought he would wake up but he showed signs he still wants to sleep so I rocked him to sleep again.

However, he still hasn't woken up yet and it's 9pm!!

He usually doesn't ever sleep this long.

I'm just really worried. Any advice will be much appreciated

What's been wrong with your toddler I take it a temperature? I'm sure it's fine they sleep longer when poorly just keep in room with you and monitor

Calpol makes kids sleepy. I know plenty of mums giving little ones a dose of Calpol before getting on a flight - helps with ears and side effect...well they'll be sleepy

Hi, firstly try not to worry, if your little one has been poorly he may have had interrupted sleep and now he has had the calpol and he feels better he may be catching up? Babies tend to be a little bit sleepier when sick because it takes energy to fight off illnesses, have you checked his temperature and for rashes? if you’re worried I would ring 111 for advice, they may be able to put your mind at ease or advise you on what to do! I’m sure he will wake up hungry soon! X

It's quite normal for them to sleep longer when they are unwell. Has he had calpol before?

Itonlytakesone · 10/03/2025 21:17

Yes I agree with @Marie8611

helloy · 10/03/2025 21:19

He hasn't ever slept longer than 3 hours and thats odd? Even when unwell? Is this his first dose of calpol ever?

Ph3 · 10/03/2025 21:20

My kids always slept longer when given calpol. Just think about it if you have a fever as an adult (and have no kids 🤭) you tend to drift in and out and sleep it off. Kids are the same. They aren’t well and the calpol must have given him some relief so he’s sleeping more. Just keep checking his temperature and makes sure he is drinking

Thank you so much everyone for the reassuring messages! he doesn't have temperature atm and also he never slept before more than 3 hours for a nap. This was supposed to just be a nap although very late at 6pm but he woke up late. So that's why I'm really worried as usually if he naps evenings it's only an hour or an hour and a half

He probably thinks it's bedtime if he's 17 months and is having an 'evening nap' at 6pm, no?

Surely it’s just bedtime for him though? 7’s a usual time for a toddler to go to bed so 6pm isn’t much earlier and he’s unwell. I’d assume he’s just gone to sleep for the night.

Valhalla17 · 10/03/2025 21:28

If he's unwell it's because he is in need of rest, surely? Just make sure he's well hydrated. With a temp their is a risk of dehydration, which can also make you feel more tired.

Timetochillnow · 10/03/2025 23:19

He napped at 6.10, had his bedtime feed at 7. and is probably asleep now for the night

being unwell makes you tired and calpol has eased his discomfort and allowed him to relax and sleep

Undrugged · 10/03/2025 23:30

He woke up for a feed after an hour, which is good.

it sounds like he might just be unwell and whacked out, but if he seems very lethargic/ drowsy/ unresponsive and not himself then you should get him checked out if you feel it’s necessary. Hard when it runs into the night as they are naturally more sleepy then, but you know your baby.

very high chance he is just a bit unwell and needs to sleep. I remember one of mine sleeping for 18 hours in 24 once and I was so freaked out because this baby was a party animal who never slept.
