Does it matter what side the next to me crib is on?

I called the National Breastfeeding advice line when I was having issues with feeding but the lady I spoke to mentioned that I (Mums) should really be sleeping on same side as the next to me crib as the baby is used to the stop of the mum’s breathing which will help regulate them. I had never come across this advice before. I had a C-section and because I was struggling to get out of bed and my husband slept on the side of the crib. Once I was able to get out of bed properly, I moved back to sleeping next to the crib but since then if I’ve been feeling under the weather, my husband will sleep on the side of the next to me crib.

My question is does it matter whether mum or dad is sleeping on the same side of the next to me crib?

Oh look, another way to make new mothers feel terrible.

I have never heard that before; I think generally the baby goes on the mother's side because it makes it easier for feeding but I think the breathing thing is rubbish (not that you shouldn't be sleeping in the same room as a baby but because I really doubt it makes a difference who is where!)

I’m glad you said that as she made me feel awful at the time - to the point I actually stopped breastfeeding - which is why I initially called 😅 didn’t ask for sleeping advice 🙄

I thought as long as at least one parent was sleeping in the same room it’s fine

DD was so noisy and I was so hyper vigilent I couldn't sleep. I would often move to sleep on the sofa bed in the night, leaving DD in the room with DH. (I still usually woke up first when she stirred even down the hallway wearing earplugs!). In the room, she was in a moses basket at the foot of the bed.

I don't even think the rationale makes sense - why does it matter whose breathing they can hear and can they really not hear breathing if mum is about 1m further away?!
