Baby goes down too late

Hi!

First time I've signed up and made a post so I'm sorry if I don't format/do things correctly!

My baby is 4 months old and she sleeps absolutely brilliantly, can't fault that. However she doesn't go down until between 2300-0000 and she'll wake up typically between 1100-1300 and while I shouldn't complain, I would just really like her to go down earlier and wake up earlier.

Has anyone got any tips on how to make this happen, please? I just don't want to change how well she sleeps, she's been a dream.

Thanks!

She's sleeping from 2300 to 1300?! You're kidding right?

Reugny · 12/02/2025 16:14

To be fair you had her in winter so it isn't surprising her sleeping times are a bit mucked up as it's nearly always dark.

How often do you take her outside into day light?

ThatUniqueKoala · 12/02/2025 16:14

I'll bite & assume you're genuinely serious. WAKE HER UP!

Get her up in the morning at a normal time, engage with her, feed her, do some parenting maybe?

Put her to bed at a normal time, 1800/1900, repeat.

How are you fitting in enough feeds, nappy changes and play time if she's sleeping half of the day. What are you doing whilst she's sleeping?

TheNiftyTiger · 12/02/2025 16:25

Are you okay??
I'm after a bit of help and you're attacking my parenting with very little context 😂

Wake her up (and put her to bed) an hour earlier each day. And get as much daylight as you can between times!

Ah that definitely makes sense!

So me and my OH split taking our eldest to school so I'll take her 2 days and I take baby with me. She'll be asleep again on the drive home so I'll put her back down. Then she comes with me everyday to pick the eldest up. Occasionally we go for a walk around the block but not always, I'm on a coast and it's windy as anything around here.

You just need to time shift slowly by 15m every day or two.

So tomorrow make sure baby is awake by 10.45 latest.

Start bedtime routine around 9.30 and have her in the cot by 10.15

On day 2 wake her at 10.30 and have her in bed by 10....

By say 3 she's up by 10.15 latest... etc

Once awake and ged get outside and get some daylight / fresh air on her face

All of my kids have done this OP. How I got them to change was to get them up 15 mins earlier and then put them to bed 15 mins earlier. Then every few days shift the routine 15/ 20 mins earlier ( both going down to sleep and waking up ) until you are happy with the timings.
good luck!

Would just like to clarify that a 1300 is a maybe once a week occurrence. It's between 1100 and 1200 she wakes up most days.

Me again! Did you find this effected how well they slept or?

My first was similar, if I put her down in her cot she was wide awake again and wasn't going down properly until 2am (on a good night!) and slept in until 10ish. She was bathed and in pjs at a reasonable time, being fed to sleep in a dark bedroom but just couldn't transfer without waking.

We just rolled with it until she hit 6 months and one evening just fell asleep at 7:30pm. Since that day she's always wanted to be asleep by 7:30, just had to wait for her body clock to click.

Ah that sounds like a nightmare! My first was like that after her colic passed, she would only sleep on somebody and it would be really difficult to transfer her.

I will start trying the 15 minute earlier thing everyday and if not I'll hold out hope for her internal clock to figure things out! Thanks ☺️

No. No change really in how they slept due to changing the time. We had
more change with sleep routines when they went through ‘developmental leaps’ and they wanted to practice what they had learnt. Bringing the timings forward was probably one of the easier sleep issues we dealt with !

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 12/02/2025 17:24

My son used to do this when he was that age, still does if given the choice. Both me and his dad are night owls and not morning people so there must be an element of genetics there. I find when I wake him up earlier in the morning he will go to bed earlier too. It needs to be gradual though. If I wake him up to early his body thinks the night time sleep was a nap and that makes everything worse because he then gets his days and nights completely mixed up and starts sleeping even more during the day. Maybe try waking her up an hour earlier than she usually wakes up, then when she’s used to that another hour earlier until she’s waking up and going to bed at more reasonable times.

Ah I see! Thank you.
My baby is just completely the opposite to my eldest daughter because she had colic and then when she got over that, she wasn't the best sleeper, right up until she moved from the cot into a bed.
