Anyone with experience of floor beds for 10+months old?

My ten month old is having lots of disrupted nights, with multiple wake ups. His sleep hasn’t been great since he outgrew the next to me crib - tried a travel cot (with added mattress) which he hated, then moved into his own room which saw an improvement but it’s still very hit and miss. Comfort seems to be an issue as he’s tired and goes to bed pretty quickly, but he gets really restless and fidgety through the night. He sleeps really well if I put him in my bed, even if I’m just sat watching him, not cuddling him. We’ve just spent a week with family and tried the travel cot, but it’s been a nightmare.
I’ve been reading about the Montessori style floor mattress / bed options - wondered if anyone here had experience with using one for a baby and could advise?
He has two naps a day and will sleep 7-6:30 in my bed. I’m relaxed about co sleeping at the moment (until he’s big enough for a bed) but don’t want him to be in our bed for years, my dh is less keen as he’s worried about this happening!

We did a floor bed from 9 months when DD grew out of the next to me. Highly recommend! You can lie with them to go to sleep and then roll away - no transfers. Is there anything specific you want to know?

Thanks for replying. Good to know it worked for you!

Just thinking about the practicalities - did you buy one with rails attached or was your room baby-proofed? My boy is such a daredevil, I’m worried about him getting into trouble even if we think everything is safe and secure 😅

We had a thin firm mattress from Ikea and just put that directly on the floor. (If you do that, you do have to regularly lean it against the wall to air it.) I felt like that was safer than something with extra wooden bits to bang into or climb on, and I'm not sure that any floor beds would actually contain a daring baby/toddler.

So we baby proofed the room - ours has no other furniture and we bought boxy cover things for the plug sockets. Our baby monitor is a Lollipop wrapped around the curtain rail and the cable is secured to the wall. Happy to answer any other questions!

Ah yeah I was concerned the bars would provide a fun challenge for him. That sounds like the best approach - thanks for the tips about the socket covers and monitor. Just got to convince my husband to give it a go now!

I had a floor bed with my twins. I was really struggling for sleep. I have a wooden sleigh bed and put the slats on the floor and the mattress on that. The sides were quite high so no one rolled out. I mainly co slept with them as bf. Till they were about two then they slept there alone and transitioned to toddler beds pretty quickly.

Good luck! It will definitely be the easiest transition from co-sleeping and if your husband isn't keen on that carrying on then this is the way to go. You can then also co-sleep in your little one's room sometimes if you miss it.

Double mattress on the floor since birth for all of mine. Sleep with them as long as needed. Never allowed baby or child in our bed.
They don't need us often now but when they do it's lovely to be with them for a bit with enough space for everyone to rest, and also lovely to go back to own bed!!!

Thanks. It makes a lot of sense, but some people irl have acted like I’m mad to consider getting rid of the cot!

We just went really low to the ground and baby-proofed the room. We did a mattress big enough for the adult to join so we didn’t have to lay on the floor.

editing to add that it works so well that I can’t quite figure out why culturally we have been convinced that cots are the way to go. I liked having a Moses basket style place to set baby down when very tiny, but that was honestly more for during the day in the main house to keep the pets from thinking it was ok to walk on her.

Hi @HumHU3 did you do this in the end? How did you get on?

123togo · 22/11/2025 22:41

I’ve just been googling and found this thread again 😆 @HumHU3 if you are still out there I’d love to know how it went. Thank you.
