Baby will only sleep on stomach. What do I do?

My baby is 9 months old and does not sleep in the night

I put him down on his back and he cries he then rolls himself (with a bit of effort as in a sleeping bag) onto his stomach and is asleep instantly.

I obviously roll him back onto his back as per guidance but he just starts crying again.

Do I just need to ride this out until he is one and then he can sleep on his stomach?

Is it worth getting rid of the sleeping bag so he can move easily and use a secured tucked in blanket put him to sleep on his back and when he turns in about 3 seconds just leave him too it?

I am a zombie and have a toddler and 2 older children to look after

I should meniton he can crawl and pull himself up to stand and looks like he will take some steps in the next few days so he is capable of switching positions easily

My grandson did this from about 6 months old. My daughter kept turning him over but he was on his tummy again within minutes. He'll be fine .

The guidelines are to put them on their back to sleep. If you're doing that and they roll over, you can't spend the night awake rolling them back!'

Thank you both. This is the thing I really can't keep turning him back. I literally put him down and he turns within seconds on to his stomach

Should I get rid of his sleeping bags and use blankets for easier movement?

I used to do this from younger than hour so and still can't sleep on my back in my 40s. I feel like rolling over a sleeping baby repeatedly in the night so he wakes up and cries seems cruel!

If he can roll front to back on his own then I wouldn’t waste energy spending the whole night rolling him over! We used sleeping bags because it meant even with my super wriggly active sleepers they wouldn’t get tangled in the blankets or wake up cold

If they can get themselves into yummy sleeping position they are absolutely fine to be left there. My LO front slept as soon as he started rolling and still does. If he can crawl and pull to stand he won’t come to any harm, I’d keep the sleeping bag though.

If they can roll back its considered fine to leave them if they roll on to their front

You’ve totally misunderstood the guidelines. You put them down on their back when you first place them in the cot but then they’re fine to get into whatever sleeping position they find comfy- stomach is absolutely fine! I’m sure you’re not the first and you definitely won’t be the last person to get confused, the back to sleep message definitely sticks, but with a 9MO that’s rolling then the only issue is of your own making 😬 Which is good really as it’s an easy fix! Stick with the sleeping bag but then leave him alone and let him sleep. Worth keeping in mind too that duvets or loose covers shouldn’t be used until they’re 12 months old. A cellular blanket would be the only safe alternative and I personally think that sounds chilly for winter and just not needed when he’s happy in a bag.

As soon as my DS could roll onto his tummy, that's where he slept. I couldn't stop it.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 24/12/2024 12:25

My youngest was a tummy sleeper from quite early on, but definitely by 6 months. I was not rolling her back. I did as you - put her to sleep on her back and left her to it.

Don't worry, he will be fine.

My baby is 10m and majority sleeps in his belly. He tosses and turns. It's completely fine they'll do want they want to do. We can't watch them all night. It's ok x
