Newborn crying on sleep at 5:30 every morning

Hi all,
DS is 8 weeks old and for the most part a really good sleeper. We’ve got him on the Blissful Baby Expert’s newborn routine (highly recommended her!) and he’s doing great. He has a bottle at 3am and another at 7:30. But every single days he wakes us up by crying in his sleep at 5:30. It’s not just whimpering, it’s writhing around looking like he’s in pain and if we just leave him it turns into full blown screaming. He’s not hungry, nappies are fine and he really wants to be asleep! If I pick him up he’ll fall asleep on my chest for another couple of hours as long as he’s lying on his front. This works but it means I can’t sleep and we’re really trying to avoid co-sleeping. I know you can’t put a newborn down on their tummy but it seems to stop him hurting when he’s lying on his front.
He’s recently (the last 2 days) been diagnosed with a cows milk protein allergy and we’ve switched to special formula. Although this has helped loads with our other problems it hasn’t stopped the 5am cries.
any advice from anyone?!?

Could he be cold? I mention it because 5 / 5.30am have consistently been times mine have woken when coldness was the issue. Sometimes adding an extra layer like a vest can make a difference. I know you have to be careful not to over heat babies, but whenever I have followed the guidelines in winter, mine have been cold and I've had to layer up. Same with sleepsacks when they got older. All mine needed 3.5 tog sleep sacks in winter or they'd wake cold. According to the guidelines, 3.5 tog is for very cold climates, but the recommended 2.5 tog was never enough.

Omg he was cold!! I added an extra blanket to him at 5:30 when he started waking and he went back to sleep until 7:00am. Thank you so much! I never would have thought of that!
