DS is 20 months old. He naps like clockwork every day from 11-1. Yesterday and today he hasnt wanted a nap. Today I put him to bed and read to him like normal and then left the room and I left him in there for an hour - he was happily playing I could hear him over the monitor. Eventually I went up and he had done a poo so I changed him and tried to get him to go to sleep but he just wanted to play with me. I really think he still needs a nap and more to the point I need a bloody nap!! I'm not ready to let nap time go! What age did your children stop napping? Is this early? On time? What should I do?

DS1 stopped completely at 18 months,

DS2 still had a nap in the afternoon until he was just over 3

DS3 currently 11 months often only has one 2-3hr nap just after lunch.......

eenybeeny · 28/04/2008 15:39

yes justabout we crossed posts.

I am like you. I really really really think naps are a good thing. And not just for selfish reasons. I am going to keep putting him down at the right time and hopefully he will get back in the swing.

dd1 was 22 months when she stopped (maybe had occasional half an hour if in car but then would take forever to settle) dd2 is only 16months and fights her nap and has gone days without one and bed at 5.30pm instead

WowOoo · 28/04/2008 15:41

My 2yr old is trying to drop his naps, but I am insisting on nap/quiet times. Most days he will eventually fall asleep or at least play in his cot. The days that he doesn't drive me up the wall and are always when I have most to do!

eenybeeny · 28/04/2008 15:44

I kept asking him nicely, "DS would you please go to sleep now??

He ignored me.

My reason is purely selfish. But, I need the time to prepare dinner for family and ideally like to have a little sit down before I do that.
When he was 20 mths, we changed nap times to 1:30, he just wasn't tired enough by morning.

heymammy · 28/04/2008 15:45

Eeny is it practical to put him down for his nap any later? Could he be not quite tired enough anymore at 11. (or send him for a jog around the block )

DD1 stopped napping at around 20 months but DD2 is 21 months and sleeps from 1-ish until after 4pm .

Hope this is a temporary blip

WowOoo · 28/04/2008 15:46

BY 11 am in morning I mean.!

nervousal · 28/04/2008 15:47

dd is 4 and she still likes a nap in middle of day - but think it is more through habit than actually needing it. She can go all week without a nap - but come Saturday afternoon she can sleep from 3 until 5.

eenybeeny · 28/04/2008 15:48

Yes I am going to try putting him down later. Although this morning at 10:30 he was saying "Bed Please" and I was like, "No honey, its too early!" grrr

DD2 has just stopped needing a nap. She's 3.
I think DD1 was 4 when she dropped her nap, but she was a sleepy kind of kid

MrsMattie · 28/04/2008 15:53

Stopped at about 2 and a half, unless we go on a car journey, in which case he'll have a snooze.

FruitfulOfFruit · 28/04/2008 21:34

dd was 3.3; I was insisting on the nap (had a new baby), and she was going to sleep and sleeping well - but then she was awake till 10pm which was a nightmare. So had to stop!

ds1 was 2.3. It was far easier once he wasn't napping tbh. I didn't have to spend ages trying to get him to sleep, and we could go out somewhere instead. He'd have a 10-minute snooze in the pram while we collected dd from school, if he needed it.

If his current level of sleepiness is anything to go by, ds2 will be about 6. (he is 4 months now, can't manage more than 90 minutes in between naps, oh its lovely).
