Sleeping with comforters / muslin at 7.5 months?

Hi. My DS is 7 1/2 months old. He's always been a bad sleeper at night. Recently he has been refusing to go into the cot but immediately going to sleep when cuddled. This week we've tried something different and just 'cuddled' him to sleep in his cot with the muslin he uses when feeding next to him. This seems to have worked wonders and he's now sleeping much better. He no longer seems to be attached to DH or myself putting him to sleep. He's sleeping for longer stretches and when he wakes will go back off when handed a muslin (clean or used). We take the muslin off him when he's fully asleep. I've been wondering if he would sleep even longer if he we didn't take it away. Is it safe to do this at this age? Does anyone elses child sleep with a comforter? DH worries that DS will chew it and choke or smother himself.

My dd2(2 ) has always slept with a comforter.Someone bought her one when she was born and initially it was just in the moses basket with her but as she grew older she started to put it over her face and sleep with it there.

Ds slept clutching a very light lacy cot blanket from about 3 months onwards. Now aged 8, it still lives under his pillow (though is grubby and ragged now).

hi,

my DS has had a blankey & ted since approx 10 months, (still has it now at 2.4 months - carrys it around all the time!) I've never removed it, he's always been fine - I guess it would depend on how much he moves aorund.

would it work still if you tucked it in across his cot so in effect he was laying on it? (assuming he doens't move around too much)

all I say is make sure you have spares if you can! i've tried giving DS a different blankey and it's no good he knows which one's his.

My dd 2 who is now 12 months has been sleeping with a "snuggy" for months. Her snuggy is a flannel. (not one that has been used for washing I hasten to add!)

I am embarrased to admit this, but at the ripe old age of 37, I still have one, and have had one since I was little. It is the towelling aginst my face, and obv hers, that she loves and makes her feel sleepy.

God, I am sad!

Both my DTs go to bed cuddling one of the muslins that we've used that day. When they play one of their favourite games is to pull it across their faces and this is their preferred sleeping position too! I don't worry about them suffocating as I figure that if they can pull it across their faces, then they can pull it back off too IYSWIM, and the fact that it's such a lightweight fabric.

DS2 is 5 and still sleeps with Teddy who he has had from day one. Not a prob as far as i can see.

ds has long since been a dou dou addict. Tis a very good thing!

dd has had her Teddy from birth - she's 6 now. She has sucked and chewed her (we're on second dress layer and 3rd under layer) but hasn't done her any real harm afaik. Apart from her sticking bits up her nose needing a trip to A and E .... Have a reserve for those days it needs a wash or gets lost.

Thanks everyone. We've let DS sleep with the muslin this weekend and he's gone from waking every 45 minutes to only waking once in the night. He even had his first long nap ever in the cot using the muslin today so it seems to be working. Fingers crossed that it continues..

If you are worried about the muslin covering his face - you could try cutting them into quarters (so you ave four nice square pieces), hemming them and using them This is what I do for DS 15mo cos I am a bif scaredy cat and don't like him having a whole muslin in case he wraps himself up in it!

SexOnLegs - so you have a "snuggy" aswell, do you? We thought were the only ones!

When DS2 was born my mum bought him a shawl, which we christened the snuggy, and the name has stuck ever since.

Don't tell anyone, but DS2 is now 12 and still sleeps with the snuggy every night. It comes on holidays with us too - very well travelled it is!

I don't think there's anything wrong with a comforter of some sort at any age.

my 3 always. Two thumbsuckers one non. The non gave his up aged 3 but dd is 5 and has a mouse and old blanket(label lover).
ds2 13mths has a bear comforter. Friends birth gift. Adored it from the start
