5 month old “night” feeds

Hello,

I’m a first time mum and just looking for some advice really…

My 5 month old son is doing really well but I worry I’m starting some bad habits.

He goes to bed at 7:30/8pm depending on last nap. Depending on when his last bottle was he either has a bottle to go to sleep or he just self settles and goes off on his own. Then at about 10:30pm I “dream feed” him and he sleeps until 5:30am sometimes 6am. He had a bottle and falls back to sleep until 8:30/9am

I’m not complaining and I guess I can leave it as it is as it’s working. My concern is when do I know when to drop his dream feed?! And also should he be going back to sleep after his 6am feed, if this is a day feed he’d normally stay up a couple of hours before needing a “nap”? I just don’t want to be blissful unaware that I could be causing bad habits, he seems happy enough I’m just unsure about these two feeds and how I’ll know when to stop the dream one. He’s not been weaned yet but even if he’s eating will he just refuse the dream feed eventually?

A not of questions there I know 😂 thanks in advance x

At 5 months I'd say you are both doing very well and it's working for you both. You will know when the time comes to drop it- baby will not be interested in the milk or play around and not really drink it. The 6months regression is approaching so don't try and change anything and stick to your routine as much as possible to help you both through.

I would say that regardless of how things are now, sleep is often upended by teething, regressions, illness etc, so if it’s working for you both at the time, stick with it. Even if you have perfect sleep habits now, don’t expect them to last! And it sounds like you’re both doing great!

He's 5 months old

I don't think there's such a thing as bad habits with a 5 month old

Thank you ☺️ Ah okay I’m with you, he does that in the days occasionally since his teeth have started coming in. Okay great thanks for the advice, appreciate it x

Maybe not then. As I said, “first time mum” and you see a lot of different info online, nice to get advice from other mums sometimes :)

I just stopped dream feeding when it became extremely hard to wake him up and started
Giving him
More bottles in the daytime

He'll be on food too soon so will get a little more full from that

tangobravo · 31/10/2024 22:16

At that age it sounds like you're both doing brilliantly, don't fix it if it ain't broke as they say!

That’s what I thought, thank you!

Sleeping over 12 hours at night 🫣 I agree with the sentiment "if it's not broken, don't fix it"

Chaispice · 01/11/2024 22:02

Oh god do not mess with this!! You have it soo good, imagine you messed it up. He even self settles to sleep at bed time?! I wouldn’t dare change a thing. He’s not going to be dream feeding at 15 so I wouldn’t worry about bad habits personally
