How quickly do you fall asleep

I was having a chat with my husband before bed. I went into the next room to get some face cream, came back and asked him a question.. he was asleep. Couldn't have been more than 30 seconds between him having a normal conversation and being fast asleep. How??? I need to read for at least 20 minutes then lie there thinking calming thoughts for God knows how long. Could be 10 minutes. Could be an hour.

Same with night wake ups. If the kids wake me up I'll be awake for hours. If they wake him up he will settle them back down and immediately go back to sleep (thankfully he now deals with all night time stuff and I sleep with ear plugs in)

Does anyone else fall asleep this quickly? What is this witchcraft?? I feel like my brain is so busy it takes ages to get it to quiet down. Does he just not have a busy brain??

My partner is same. And ex was. I am same as you. Hugely irritating.

I suffered from insomnia for years, exacerbated by antidepressants to the point I was hallucinating from exhaustion. On good nights it'd take me 45 minutes to an hour to fall asleep. On bad ones I could lie there all night and maybe sleep half an hour. This was ultra annoying because my husband can go from "goodnight" to snoring like a tractor within 60 seconds.

Then after I weaned myself off the ADs inexplicably my lifelong struggle with sleep disappeared. All of a sudden I'm one of those people who says goodnight, lays my head down, and I'm asleep. In seconds. I don't know what witchcraft it is but I never want it to stop.

That's amazing! So glad it's better for you now. I can only dream of falling asleep so quickly 😴

Yes, I regularly go from conversation to sleeping within 30 seconds. Past partners have found it annoying. I think they feel resentful and abandoned. On the plus side it means I can take a nap very easily. I often shut down for 15 mins in my lunch break. If there's a trick to it I don't know what it is.

Ah yes, I remember seeing that a 15 minute nap is the perfect time to refresh yourself and I thought 'but I'd still be trying to fall asleep after 15 minutes' 🙈

Like your dh.
I put the light out, close my eyes, and can be asleep.

I don't go to bed until late, mind you.

The downside is it's not always voluntary, I now doze off on the sofa and occasionally on the train which is never something I've done before. Woke up in fecking Nottingham the other day, which is not where I was trying to go at all 🙃

Cobblersorchard · 23/09/2024 23:35

4 mins when I was in the sleep clinic, which they seemed to think was pretty average.

I’d say 5–10 from lights out average. Depends if the cats are still twatting about or not. Tonight they are doing hot laps of the house and we are without carpet (renovating) so I defy anyone to sleep listening to that.

Oh shit! Maybe start setting an alarm when you get on the train just in case...

My dh is the same. He's fast asleep before the plane even leaves the runway. I'd love it. I need to properly wind down. I think it can take me 20-30 minutes to fall asleep.

teaandkittehs · 02/10/2024 12:58

I'm the same as you - ages to get to sleep, sometimes when woken by the baby or something else I then lay awake all night. I've been awake since 2.30am this morning. My partner falls asleep in less than a minute. I've got chronic insomnia which is awful when you have a young child!

SingingSands · 02/10/2024 13:15

It takes me ages. My DH is like yours - closes his eyes and that's it! Infuriating 😆

Andtheworldwentwhite · 02/10/2024 13:17

I’m so tired I cannot keep my eyes open from about 8pm. So I’m in bed before 8.30. My head hits that pillow and I am done. I don’t always sleep all the way through and I am up by 5.30 ( have tried to change the timings but has never worked ). My husband marvels at how quick it takes me. 30 seconds and I’m done.

Imalongtimepostingmum · 02/10/2024 13:22

I'm straight to sleep. Seconds. Five breaths maybe. It doesn't matter if I'm stressed or worried or ill.

I sleep in my lunch hour in my car too if I need it. Both DH and I sleep as soon as we get on a plane.

I don't ever ever ever have a lie in though. Up by 6 pretty much year round and usually 5ish. Marvel at those people whose husbands bring them a cup of tea in bed. It's never happened to me.

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 02/10/2024 13:23

Either within 15mins or 2-4hrs. There's no in between.

LimeLime · 02/10/2024 13:27

I fall asleep straight away, it's staying asleep that's the problem. Once I've had a couple of hours I'm awake and lying staring at the ceiling. Then when I eventually get up I'll fall asleep in my chair after breakfast. So annoying.

cassiefromlondon · 02/10/2024 13:27

About 3 hours! I'm never asleep before 3am. Insomnia is highly annoying

SallyWD · 02/10/2024 13:38

It really varies. Sometimes (like last night) I'm asleep within 5 minutes. Other times, I lie awake for 1.5 hours. Some night I wake up in the middle of the night and can't sleep for an hour.l or more.
