Help - PUPD method

14 week old baby boy currently only sleeping in my arms or in the sling and is waking every hour through the night. Tried PUPD method for an hour there at nap time with no success. He just screamed every time I set him down. In the end gave in and rocked him to sleep as usual as it's so upsetting. Any advice please?! How long do you carry on attempting pupd before deciding it's not right for your baby? What if they get so upset they're not being comforted when you pick them up?

Our issue (aside from waking every hour through the night) is that even rocking him to sleep isn't working well, he gets upset, so we are needing to do something different. Any advice really appreciated!!

I would try at bedtime first not naptime. There is more sleep pressure at bedtime, easier for baby to fall asleep.

PUPD didn't work for my baby either. He just got more and more distressed. I carried on with dummy and holding and patting to sleep until he was about 22 weeks when his nighttime sleep got really horrendous. I was up holding him pretty much all night for a week. I was so tired I couldn't carry on like that any longer so in desperation I tried controlled crying at bedtime. He cried for a total of 13 minutes and more a complaining, fussing cry rather than distressed and then was asleep! I couldn't believe it. He still wakes in the night for feeds but only 2-3 times now.

It might not be for you, but I guess I'm just saying that some babies fall asleep easier if you're not there to distract them.

My advice, baby is too young for this.

We did it at seven months for mine and that was soon enough.

Thanks both, that's really helpful x

PUPD worked amazingly for us but DD1 was 8months. The advice is not to do any form of sleep training before 6months. It's tough - both of mine have only done contact naps in the daytime but you just have to roll with it until they are a bit more developed. In America, they do it very differently (i assume as mat leave is so short there) so if you are looking for advice online / social media etc, make sure its for UK guidance, not US.

Have you tried a dummy or extra feeds for the night time wakes? DD1 had a dummy and it hugely helped her to resettle. She also needed night feeds but quite a long time. DD2 is less bothered and has started to sleep through much earlier than DD1. Both responded great to white noise.
