5 month old won't go back to sleep after nighttime feed

Baby was 5 months old yesterday and for the last 2 weeks will not go back to sleep if he wakes anytime after 2 am.

I am desperate for sleep. Partner can't/won't help. Any advice would be amazing.

Why won't your partner help???

Blu3Bell · 28/08/2024 10:20

@IggityZiggity Doesn't wake up when baby cries and has fallen asleep holding him multiple times in the evening so has never done a night feed.

What do your day naps , wake up time, bedtime look like?

and how does baby fall asleep?

p.s. your partner does need to step up while you go through this and have a bloody coffee if needs be!
that's what being a partner is about, supporting each other.

@Wingingitmum11 Happy with a wake up from 6am. Naps vary a bit depending on how early we get up, my aim is:

1st nap 730/8 for 45 mins - 1hr (if 6am wake)

2nd nap at 11ish for 2 hrs

3rd nap at 4 for 30-45 mins

Bedtime at 7.

For daytime naps its just pop dummy in and lie him on my chest, takes 10 mins tops to get him to sleep. Or if we're out he'll nap in car seat or pram with no problem.

Bedtime is bottle, song whilst I burp him, story then cot. Sometimes he falls asleep part way through, sometimes wide awake. Once in cot I put my hand on his chest to help settle and dummy back in as needed, don't get him up again unless he hasn't burped earlier. Sometimes he's straight asleep, sometimes drops off and wakes again for up to an hour. Always has 1 night feed, anytime from 130-5.

Asking partner for help just causes fights, and he's been having MH issues since the birth (apparently birth trauma related).

@Blu3Bell seems like you have a really good routine to me!
hopefully just a phase that passes then. I know that's not much help.

Your partner needs to step up though, Mh aside.
We do one night off at the weekend for me and I go in another bedroom. Is this possible?
your mh is also important and if your getting no sleep then it will also be effected and he is being selfish!!!
He can't choose to opt out of the hard parts of parenting and leave it all to you.

@Wingingitmum11 It's nice to hear I'm on the right track at least!

He just thinks his sleep is more important because he works, although he has agreed to get up an hour earlier when needed so I can go back to bed. He sleeps right through the babies cries so even if he took over for a night I wouldn't be able to sleep with worrying. First week home he took baby to another room one night 'to give me a break'. I assumed he would soothe him but he just left him in his carrycot and went back to sleep whilst he screamed!
