5am wake ups

Firstly I apologise to anyone having a worse time and lacking sleep, it's absolute torture and I've been there.

My gorgeous little boy won't stop waking at 5am no matter what. We've tried shorter naps, earlier and later bedtimes, more calories during the day, and dream feeds. His bedroom is dark with blackout blinds and he has white noise playing. I'm all out of ideas! He goes to bed around 7pm and is still pretty tired when he wakes but won't go back to sleep with cuddles or a bottle. He's up for 2.5 to 3 hours then has his first nap.

Any advice or suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

Sleep when he sleeps, and remember that he won’t be like this when he’s 16, this is just a phase.

How old is he OP?
Both mine are early risers, have never manage to do anything that changes their get up time apart from them getting older.
In the end I came to accept it and went to bed earlier.
Sorry it's not much help. Fingers crossed it's just a stage and they will grow out of it quickly!

Dts are 13, still bloody early risers but can obviously look after themselves now. 6am is normal but it used to be anything that started with a 5 was a win. Some people are just wired that way.

Sounds like he's an early riser.

If putting him to bed earlier made no difference then put him to bed earlier so he gets enough sleep/you can go to bed earlier.

My first son was like this from about 18 months until 2.5/3. Nothing we tried work? We just had to give him time. Sorry! He’s 5 now and sleeps until 7am

If you do make any changes to bed time you have to really commit. It can take up to two weeks to see the benefit of any changes you try

Yes we went through this phase as well. It stopped when he dropped to one nap around 16 months.

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 21/08/2024 13:12

@JJLondon His age is pretty crucial here! As is the number of naps he is having.

Is he sleeping through 7pm to 5am? If he is then you're probably best off just going to bed early yourself- it won't last forever.

It might improve now as we go into autumn because it'll be darker in his room so hopefully he'll sleep a bit longer!
