Day Time Naps Problem

Hi all,

I'm a third time Mum so you'd think I'd have this all sorted by now...... ! My 4 month old baby goes to sleep on his own no problem at night. He knows that when it's dark and he's put in his crib awake that it's sleep time and he'll go for anything from 5 to 10 hours without waking. As the light nights come in, I may have a problem, but that'll be another thread, lol!

Anyway, in the day he WILL NOT nap in his crib. He gets positively hysterical if I try to get him to. I should add that he wouldn't be laid down on his own at all when he was born and that I carried him in a sling (and still do some of the day) and co-slept with him until 5 weeks. The constant contact has paid off as he will happily play on his own or sit in his rocker etc for periods of time, watching us move around etc. However, when he's tired he will not go to sleep unless he is in his (moving) pram or in the car, as soon as we stop he's awake again. He's also very attached to me, and will become very upset if I'm not around for more than half an hour, as soon as I'm near him again he settles straight away. If he does fall asleep in his rocker (with me rocking him!) then he'll be awake within half an hour every time.

I would love for him to go for a nap in the day for an hour or two so that I can either rest or just get on with things (he's gone back to waking for feeds 2 - 3 times a night after having dropped it to 1 !). It might well be a daylight problem as he settles in our room instantly when it's pitch black. Don't really want to resort to blackout curtains as I won't be able to get him to sleep anywhere other than home and I may have to go back to work in a few months.

Anyone else had this problem and managed to resolve it? He's such a happy, smiley baby I can't bear to see him so desperately upset when I put him in his crib in the day....

neither of mine napped for any length of time until they were about a year - just 20 - 40 minutes here and there - unless I got into bed with them, when they would snuggle up and have an hour, or even two.

Hi Tellyaddict.

I had the same problem with no2 and it is sooo tiring. In retrospect I think a lot of t was due to her sn which did not become totally apparent until she was older but anyhow out of desperation the only way I got her to nap was to take her in bed with me for a nap.Luckily ds was still having a nap in his room at this stage. As she has got older she did eventually settle for a nap in her cot by herself, with about 10 mins screeching before she settled. Now she goes down withotut a murmur but ds has grown out of his now!!!
