Out of interest what do you do when LO out grows the moses basket and there is no room for a cot in your room?

My DD's have both been biggish babies and out grow the moses basket before 6mths. I have no room for a crib/cot in the bedroom.
With dd1 she went in her own room at 6wks. DD2 is 2.5 wks and will probably out grow the moses basket in a couple of months.
What does everyone do?

I put DD in her cot bed (in moses basket to start) with the Monitor up full and the door open.

From downstairs we can hear her turn over as the soundproofing is so bad. If you are particularly worried you could look at getting a crib - bigger then MB but smaller than a Cot.

Ds1 in our room til 8 months

DS2 in his own room aged 5 weeks, could not stand the snorting and snuffling

Guidelines say something like 6 months

How are you getting on, Tori ?

We had this problem too. DD went into her cot in her own room from 10 weeks and we too have our monitor on all the time she's in there. I didn't do the moses basket in the cot thing, but i did put a rolled up towel under the cot sheet to the approximate width of the basket so that DD could feel something on her hands when she reached out, IYKWIM.

There's a cot from Ikea that is smaller than the standard and is only £28.

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/04/2008 01:02

We bought a crib. It only takes a little more room than a moses basket - are you sure you can't fit one in?

S1ur · 13/04/2008 01:04

Personally.
I co-sleep.

S1ur · 13/04/2008 01:05

Boys - yeah it is six months because the sids risk drops off quite a lot after six months.

My son outgrew his crib really early, as he was also big. Think he was just short of 3 months. I put him in his own room with monitor on and doors wide open, as there was no room in our room for a cot.

tori32 · 13/04/2008 13:52

boysarelikedogs We are getting on great thanks. Have you name changed?
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I can't really afford to splash out on a crib which might get used for a few months and I don't want to co-sleep completely as DH smokes, so safer not to.
I think I will just put her in her own room as we do have a teddy camera over her cot which connects to the TV downstairs (present for dd1). I think that will be safe enough.
I just wondered if people did put them in their own rooms early or if I was being a bit harsh.

tori we moved DD into a cot in her room at around 12 weeks.
She is now nearly 8 months and has been sleeping through the night in her own room since then. We always have her monitored with both an apnoea and audio monitor.

JimJammum · 20/04/2008 20:07

I panicked about putting ds in his own room at 12 weeks as he was growing out of moses, and no room in our room. Then I polled the mums at mother and baby, and over half of them had already shifted their babies out of the parent's room. TBH didn't even use a monitor as could hear when he cried without it, and figured that, if he did stop breathing, the monitor wouldn't pick it up anyway. But it is what works best for you.

Oblomov · 20/04/2008 20:23

Ds was in his own room within days. He was just a snorter, snorer, gruffler. I KNOW this is not recommedned, but dh and i weren't getting asnysleep at all. I would not actually recommend this to anyone else, I am just admitting that we did it.
I didn't even need a monitor. I could hear him all the time and got rid of our monitor pronto aswell.

amazonianwoman · 20/04/2008 20:38

DD went into cot in own room at 6wks. DS went into cot in own room at 3wks (they were both whoppers and v light sleepers at that stage)

I slept on a futon mattress on their floors til around 14wks - was breastfeeding them lots during the night.

Mumsnut · 20/04/2008 20:39

You could 'reverse' the monitor - so she can hear you breathing, as if you were in the room with her..

Or get the Angelcare one (beeps if they stop breathing).

We had the same problem and I solved it by putting DD in a cardboard box! Yep nothing but the best for our child.. but seriously it's worked brilliantly. I found the box by the side of the road (!!), it used to have an executive chair in it. I cut it down and taped it so there were no sharp edges. Don't forget to cut breathing/ventilation holes in it though. It was wide enough and long enough for DD but not nearly as big as a cot. Another bonus is that the sides were the same height as the moses basket so I don't have to break my back putting her down.. would highly recommend it.. cheap too!
