Is 6am standard toddler wake up time?

Son is 17 months

bedtime 8pm, and always wakes 6am. Has a 2 hour nap during the day

have tried less nap, later and earlier bedtime but he just wakes at 6am. Is this normal for toddlers to be early risers? Also is 10 hours and 2 hour nap enough sleep overall?

Definitely try introducing a supper. It might not make a scrap of difference but I always think it’s such a long time for them to go until breakfast after a nursery tea. I now do a quick peanut butter toast/banana/scrambled egg before bed.

I think it varies, but I'd be expecting 12 hours. Bed around 6.30, 7. By 8 they might be over tired and that's why they're waking earlier.

6am is late especially in summer. You can't make children wake on adult schedules.

showersandflowers · 18/07/2024 06:21

Mine wakes up between 5am and 5.30am (2.5 now) and has done since she was about 8 or 9 months. It's just life now. We put her to bed later, she wakes up at 4.30am. We put her to bed early, she still wakes at 5.30. Nap, no nap, doesn't make a difference. That's just when she's getting up. She had a cold a few weeks ago and slept until 6.15!!!! It was amazing.

Devilsmommy · 18/07/2024 06:26

@showersandflowers my 21mo is exactly the same. 5-5:30 no matter how much you try and move naps and bedtime. I'm used to it now but it killed me right at the beginning 😅

WhatMe123 · 18/07/2024 06:28

Yes 🙈🙈

Anything with a 6 at the start was a win for us. Anything with a 4 awful and anything with a 5 the normal.

Exactly the same for us.

why the sarky comment? 6 am is very late for a toddler, much later than many people. A two hour nap is also huge. At this age mine had long since dropped all naps, and were waking 90 mins earlier, and this continued until school. They sleep more now as teens

Waking at 04:30 and not napping is certainly not typical for a 17 month old. Did you seek any sleep advice?

OP 6am is completely normal, as is the two hour nap. My son is 16 months and does the same, but goes to bed at 7pm and is known to have up to a 3 hour nap! But anyway, all sounds completely normal

My 7 year old was up at 5.15am today. 6am is living the dream!

Definitely agree with this! Last night our 16 month old came home and had strawberries, blueberries, a soft baby sponge cake and two yoghurts. I think a small plate of food just helps tie them over until morning

Gymmum82 · 18/07/2024 06:44

Mine are 10 and 8 and still wake up at 6. They go to bed at 8.30-9pm. Some kids are naturally early risers

SharonEllis · 18/07/2024 06:46

I was delighted if mine made it to 6 at that age. Not till they reached their teens that they slept past 6!

Blarn · 18/07/2024 06:49

Definitely add another meal in. Mine always had dinner with us after nursery at about 5:30-6 after having their nursery tea at 3:30. They would just have a smaller portion or even just pasta or toast. I think at 17 months was just dropping them to one nap and they both napped in the day until way past three!

It is hard waking up early when you don't choose to, especially when toddlers are ready to go from the moment they open their eyes! I remember frequently thinking "it must be lunchtime now" when it was actually only 10:15 or something.

HS1990 · 18/07/2024 06:52

My 2 year old sleeps 8pm till about 7am with a good minimum 90 mins nap in the middle of the day. He's a dream so you're not far off.

My 4 year old also sleeps 8pm but regularly wakes anytime between 5.30am and 6am. Today it was 5am thanks to a wee accident. She refuses generally to go back to bed. She gives me more sleep deprivation than my son.

Kids...

crostini · 18/07/2024 06:52

Mine was waking at around that time but since the summer holidays have started they've been going to bed later and never wake before 7 now, sometimes up until 9. Will have to reign it back in when my eldest starts school again, but for now I'm enjoying it. A consistently later bedtime will absolutely help a child sleep later, but you have to do it for a least a week, not just one night.

InTheRainOnATrain · 18/07/2024 06:53

I would definitely feed him again at 6/6.30 to see if that helps. Otherwise it’s such a long time to be going without food, I’m actually surprised you’re getting him to sleep as long 6am!

Laalaalala · 18/07/2024 20:09

Thanks all.

I try to pick him up before he has food at nursery so then I feed him about 4.30/5. And he eats a lot for his tea. I think tomorrow I will do a lighter evening tea then a supper before bed like toast or something.

im ok with 6am wake up (as much as I can be 🤣) but I just wasn’t sure whether it was enough sleep overall including his nap. As I said, it’s 50/50 whether he sleeps through or wakes at least once.

thank you all for your replies.

It is what it is op, just accept it. My 2 year old wakes at 7 but my nearly 6 year old wakes at 5am - 6:30am! Both obviously same upbringing and neither child naps. It's just the way they are.
