Baby standing

So we have had a good run of sleep. Baby usually lies down, rolls over and falls asleep if we hit the time right. However now he’s learnt he can stand up in his cot. Every single time we put him down he’s standing straight up. He’s in a sleep suit and not steady on his feet so if we leave him to stand he falls straight down and bangs his head with an almighty thud then is inconsolable. So we’ve been going in and putting him down (over and over) which he becomes distraught. Even if we lie next to him on the floor he gets up and looks down over the cot bars! It’s hours of crying now. We’ve tried overtired, undertired, just right, one nap, two naps! Help!

This is normal when they’re learning a new skill unfortunately. I would try plenty of opportunities to practice their standing, walking and most importantly sitting down again during the day and if it’s still really bad then put them in the travel cot because it doesn’t have hard wooden bars like the cot.

It's a difficult phase. I'd suggest two options:

  1. Endure it until they get bored of this new skill, or they learn to land on their bum properly.
  1. Switch to using a travel cot so the sides are softer.

@InTheRainOnATrain will definitely up the practice in the day. How long does it usually last? He’s even doing it in the night every time he wakes so we end up feeding to sleep again 2/3/4 times which we hadn’t been.

@OhLookAnotherDay by endure would you go in each time? I think I have the stamina but my husband doesn’t and would happily go in the pram every time. I just don’t want to lose the cot nap ability. We need to buy a travel cot but it’s a great idea!

Yes I would keep going back in but I know what you mean, my husband would always choose the quietest option 🙈.
