Keeping south facing nursery cool

DD's nursery is on the south-west facing end of the house so the sun pretty much hits it all day long. In winter this is great but summer heatwaves are proving to be a challenge as it gets so hot and stuffy in there.

Keeping her room cool is difficult as I can't leave her door open overnight due to having a cat. I'm sure the cat would never harm her but i'm not willing to take that risk and give him access to her room whilst I'm asleep and can't monitor.

I have tried using a portable cooling unit that hasn't helped, currently using a standard desk fan to try and push more air around. I've tried blocking the windows in the day but the heat still creeps in, i've tried leaving the windows open and same issue.

Can anyone advise on how best to keep this room cool? Is there a particular cooling unit that may work better in a small room? I going to have to relocate her nursery to a different bedroom?

I live abroad where it is very hot and we don't have aircon. The trick is to keep the room in darkness during the day by covering the windows with blinds, and open the windows as soon as it's cooler outside than inside (i.e. evening/night).

Are you able to leave her window open at night?

Also, would you consider getting a ceiling fan? We had them put in our DCs rooms and leave them on low overnight.

Thank you

I have tried keeping both the blinds and thermal curtains shut with windows shut in the day, a small amount of light still comes through so this is maybe where the heat comes in? Have just ordered a stick on thermal blackout blind so 100% no light can get through. I really hope this will help.

Hadn't thought of a ceiling fan but will look into that too!

Try putting a bowl full of ice next to your desk fan.

You can get fans where you can put in water/ ice and it blows out a cold fog, you could put that on for a while after she goes to bed

We have the same issue, was 27 degrees last night at 8pm. Thinking about getting a portable air con unit!

Our DD's nursery was the same location in our house and honestly that first summer we lasted about two nights and then just bought a free standing air con unit. They aren't cheap but it was a game changer.

You need the blinds and curtains closed with windows open in the day.

We used to move DD’s cot into a different room on the other side of the house in especially hot weeks, is this an option? It was a lightweight ikea cot which helped!

Can you put shutters on the outside of the window?

Silviasilvertoes · 30/06/2024 22:13

DS has a south facing room. In really hot weather we close the blind and curtains and wedge a duvet into the curtain rail so it completely covers the window. It provides extra blackout and really stops the heat coming through. Not pretty but not permanent.

Perhaps keep the cat downstairs so you can open the door, a through breeze really helps.

Silviasilvertoes · 30/06/2024 22:15

Also agree that a through breeze is the way forward. We found in the hottest days that opening the loft hatch helped, mad as it sounds.

Portable air con unit.
