DS who normally gets me up four or five times in the night only got me up once last night!!! I am so delighted. I have no idea why though that's the only thing - I do hope it wasn't just a flook!

The only thing I can think of is he didn't nap too much in the day. In the past however I have found that bad naps lead to bad nights. Last night he was really tired though. I am not sure how much he should be napping - he is five and half months old. Normally he has a sleep in the sling about two hours after he wakes up, then a lunch time nap and then one in the afternoon too.

They tend not to be too long btw - sometimes I get a long one out of him at lunch time though - an hour and half or so. Usually they are about 30-45 mins.

Great, I think it's a good sign even if he doesn't do it again straight away,at least he can!
think there is quite a lot of variety with daytime sleeps but about 3 hrs a day seems average.I have 6mo who has about a hour in am then 1 1/2 at lunch and 30 mins in afternoon then sleeps from 7 til 7 (only for last 2 weeks or so!)
Do you normally feed him 4 to 5 times a night or does he just wake.
If it seems that going back to normal naps makes the nights worse ?try missing the afternoon nap esp if has good sleep at lunch time,
Hope it continues!

Sometimes I feed him, sometimes DH rocks him back to sleep. Usually he needs the boob though!

I've always fed ds back to sleep too, never quite managed the rocking/tummy rubbing thing!
Sometimes I think they just decide they are ready to do something and you beat yourself up trying to work out why and trying to make it happen again.

You could try dropping his afternoon nap. We've just dropped my ds's (10 month) morning sleep - he seems a bit little to only have one nap but he was resisting it so much and he has actually slept better in the nights since. I wonder if it's actually more about regular/good quality naps than the total length that contributes to good sleep?

Fingers crossed he repeats the trick for you tonight. At least you know he can do it, even if he chooses not to for a while.
