Hi

DS has been a wee gem in my books compared to his big sister! He was going 7-4-7 with some 2am feeds now and again. He's had a dummy since early on but only used it to settle at bedtime (and day time naps) so when he's woken in the night I have automatically given him a feed. For the past few nights he's woken up and fed at 2, 4 and 6 (sometimes getting up after 6am feed and sometimes sleeping until 8).

any advice on how to encourage him to sleep more than 2 hrs after 2am?

I'm having exact same issue, mine now about 18wks! (sorry, not helping your problem!) The reason I think for my DS's more frequent waking after 2am is because I have been advised to reduce milk intake, and to drop this feed.... he's hungry therefore IMO.
My instinct would say try squidging an extra feed in late afternoon/early evening, so that your DS does not need more after 2am???
I would be doing that myself, although am now panic-stricken that my DS will start getting too large...- whole 'nother story.(!)

Hi Ladies......I experienced this with my DS1 and it lasted for about 3 weeks......all due to a growth spurt as he was waking up hungry...are you on the breast or Bottle?? Could also be a sign of weaning (which I know is not recommended until 6m but it depends on the size of the baby)

My 1st DS was over 10lbs at birth and I gave him baby rice in the day which soon solved this problem (at 16 weeks incidentally!) DS2 wasn't such a porker but was still ready for some baby rice at 20 weeks. I know lots of mum's who did the same and we all have happy healthy children!!!

IF you want more info, let me know!!

Hi loucee! saw this in active convos - hoping someone will have the answer! dd had a different pattern, in that her big stretch of sleep would be 12ish - 5ish, but it's the same in that she has stopped sleeping for that length of time and we are back to intervals of 2-4hrs, 4hrs the max and only happens once a night.

the mornings are the same, this morning it was 5.30, 7, 8!

she is having a pretty big feed at every wakening, is your ds doing the same? i tried putting her down after one side at 5am, but she screamed, fed her the other side and she went out like a light, so def hungry. if it's a growth spurt it's been going on for weeks now!

biglips · 06/04/2008 09:50

its a growing spurt.....i just added more milk.

I have started weaning DS2. Hoping it'll help, although yet to see effects. But then, am only giving him very small amounts of baby rice, and one tiny icecube of a veg. 11am, and then 1t 6pm.
I don't want to overload him with calories (FF baby from 6weeks)
He is a 'big boy', still healthy looking though, I think he is ready for the weaning. As Caz10 also says though, if this is a growth spurt causing him to wake so much between 2am and 6am..... then it is lasting WEEKS! Argh!

could be teething, it can start months before any will appear. when this starts they start eating/drinking less in the day as their gums are sore but find that they are hugry in the night and sucking at noght is much less sore on the gums.

thanks for the replies, sorry been out all day.

He's fully breastfed with a bottle of expressed milk just after his bath. He's over 15lbs now at 15wks. bergentulip I would try and give him an extra feed in the day but we don't have a schedule as such so I have no idea if he's fed more or less in the day since I don't know how many ounces he's had.

Perhaps I'll work on moving his 7-2 sleep because it's really tiring me out with having a 2.1 yr old and all her activities to rush round for.

Thanks for your input,

Hi again loucee! just thought, could you give him a dreamfeed at 11ish? Might make him go longer? 7-2 is a great stretch, but it's not at the best time for you is it?

loucee · 06/04/2008 21:08

Hi Caz

I tried a dreamfeed a couple of nights but made no difference at all.
I would co-sleep but if he feeds lying down for some reason he brings it all up again and also makes him constantly want my boob in his mouth when he dozes off.

I was going to try putting him to bed when we go up but he lasted til 8pm tonight and then was so tired and irritable I gave him a quick bath and then to bed.
