Should I go to GP?

DS5 has a lot of trouble with sleep.
He's often waking up at 3,4am and doesn't go back to sleep. He has a lot of fears of the dark and also he just has a very busy mind.

He goes to sleep around 7:45 - 8pm. He's very tired at this time and falls asleep easily.
He's got a night light. We do a bedtime routine. He gets plenty of stimulation and fresh air and we walk to school, he does swimming and mini athletics. He's not overly sporty but he is pretty active.

Anyway, I worry about why he can't sleep properly at this age. Thought he'd grow out of it by now. Worry about school and his health. Also it's hard for me. I'm tired.

Should we see the GP? Anyone else have a similar child?

your health visitor would be the best person to advise on sleep issues or school nurse if he is at school.

Thanks @Willmafrockfit
I tried the health visitor but they said now he's 5 he's not under them anymore. Will check about school nurse.

It's something the school nurses can help with. You can self refer to them I believe. In some areas they're called the health child program 0-19

@awakeatnightmare thanks. I'll look into referring.
Do you know what kind of help they can offer?
I have a concern that he'll start to worry there's something wrong with him and that'll make the sleep issues worse, if we over focus on it.

How much exercise is he getting a day? Under 5 the recommended is 3 hours a day but I can remember what it is for a 5 year old, maybe an hour.

What have you tried to help him get back to sleep? Big cuddly teddy with instructions to snuggle down and yoto meditation cards help our kids.

FloofyBear · 06/05/2024 07:52

Have you tried black out blinds on the window and curtains so no light disturbs him? Also sonic there's anything that may be noisy and waking him at that time - good luck

Do school have any concerns about him?

wombpaloumbpa · 06/05/2024 22:05

Yes this is really not a new thing. We have really good black out blinds, I do always try and settle him back to sleep, he's got a huge scooby doo teddy, he's got a relaxing night audio tonie, sometimes it works, but often he just can't drop back off.

I actually realised later today he's got tonsillitis and he gets it fairly often, along with coughs. So that definitely contributes. I guess I will mention that to the nurse.

No school don't have any concerns, said at a recent parents evening that he's doing well.
