12 wo DS weighs only 11lb - could this be why he needs feeding every 3 hours in the night?

I cluster feed him at 4pm, 5.30pm and 7pm just to tank him up. I then give him a dreamfeed at 10.30pm. He wakes at 2am hungry and then at around 5am hungry again. I've tried other ways to settle him but it's definitely hunger. He feeds 3 hourly in the day - that's all he wants until late afternoon.

I know he's light for his age - do you think this has got any bearing on why he can't go for longer without food at night?

IMO 3 hourly feeds at night are relatively normal for a 12 weeker? I'm sure there's nothing you're doing wrong - and nothing wrong with him.

Mine were still feeding every 2 hours at this stage - perfectly normal. You are doing all the right things - though I never did ddream feeds.

Thanks ladies. I didn't mention that he was bf. He is putting on weight at a good rate now (between 0.5-1oz per day) but he dropped from 8lb at birth to 7lb 1oz and then put on very very little for the first month due to problems establishing bf. From about week 5 he started to put on weight at a good rate but he has a lot of catching up to do.

no it's because he's 12 weeks old

moocowme · 01/04/2008 21:30

perfectly normal. just keep feeding him up and hopefully very soon you will notice he is starting to sleep a little longer between feeds in the night.

fingerwoman · 01/04/2008 21:32

No.
my 5 month old is now around 19-20lb and still feeds at least every 2 hours day and night

gardeninggirl · 02/04/2008 17:20

Normal!
Sounds like you are doing really well with the feeding
DS fed 2 hrly at that age and he was 11 lbs at birth - don't think weight makes any difference!

I wish my 16 week old would go three hours at night [knackered emoticon]

MrsTittleMouse · 02/04/2008 17:24

Completely normal. I had a complete porker () and she woke up every 3 hours to feed to when she was 12 weeks.

bubblagirl · 02/04/2008 17:33

my ds was heavy for his age and needed feeding every 2 hrs some babies are just hungrier than others

when he got to about 4 mths they started spacing out slightly but not until he was 6 mths properly when i introduced solids

Naetha · 02/04/2008 22:13

My DS is 12 weeks and wakes 3-4 times a night and he's nearly 15lbs!

He has EBM, and can usually get through about 8-12oz between 5pm and 7pm, yet he still usually wakes up at 10:30 for a feed!

What's frustrating is that he only takes about 4-5oz in total between 5am and 12 noon, yet will take 5oz at each feed until 5am! - I think I need to synchronise his sleeping times and non-eating times!

Babyisaac · 03/04/2008 09:07

Thanks ladies - seems to be getting worse though. Last night he was fed at 6.30pm and didn't even make it to his dream feed. I ended up feeding him at 9.30pm, midnight, 3am and 7am. Feels like I'm going backwards

they go through growth spurt and seem to need to feed more often i kept a feed diary for my ds so looked through that and i too was feeding every 2-3 hrs

it is tiring but remember it will get better some people dont get that long when ds was first born for first month it was every 1 hr

and from the times in night he went 4 hrs between 1 feed i wasnt even getting that long i'd feed him struggle to fall back to sleep and he'd be up again

sounds like your doing everything right and feeding times sound normal it is tiring i completely sympaphise but it will get better sleep in day when you can get to bed earlier and feeds will start spacing out
