9 month old naps less than 2 hours a day

Is this normal? She just doesn't want to nap for long. She naps 30-40 mins in the morning around 2.5hrs after she wakes up. Then she naps after lunch for a similar length of time. Then she has a 5-6 hour wake window. I'm struggling to keep her entertained and then she's really ratty by dinner time but I have to keep her awake. She sleeps around 11 hours at night (7pm-6 or 6.30am).

Please help😭

Bumping for you OP. Flowers

Watching because my 9 month old is the same in the day (two 40 minute naps) and also wakes up every two hours through the night.

thesugarbumfairy · 18/04/2024 09:41

Honestly I'd have killed someone for that level of sleep OP. 11 hours overnight! Bliss! That sounds absolutely fine. Nothing to worry about.

LenaLamont · 18/04/2024 09:44

Very normal! And likely to change, because babies sleep requirements can alter quite significantly through their developmental stages.

Don’t worry, @Babynaps

So she sleeps through the night? Is she doing her naps in the cot? With DS1 I used to go in before I expected him to wake and soothe him to sleep. DS2 needs much less sleep that him it seems, and will only sleep on a person.

HappierTimesAhead · 18/04/2024 10:43

Definitely normal! There is so much info out there about the 'right amount' of sleep but all babies are different and with daytime sleep in particular, I think it's really hard to get them to do anything other than what they want to do!

Thanks so much everyone! Good to know this is within the realms of normal. I've just heard about babies having longer naps and wondered how to keep my baby occupied for a 5-6 hour wake window. @HappierTimesAhead the last part of your post made me smile 🤣 @Robin223 you have my sympathy! To be honest, she has never been much of a napper even as a newborn.

My children are older now but DC1 would only nap for about 30 minutes unless I was holding him and like you, I found d he struggled to stay awake through tea time but slept well at night.
DC2 could sleep for ages! I used to have to wake her up! She'd still sleep all day if she could!
They're all different

slipperytiger · 18/04/2024 13:02

My baby is like this, sleeps through night. I do allow her a late nap 6:30pm which means a later bed time of 8pm ish as she seems to get sleepy quite quickly after her pm last nap. Her wake windows can be up to 5 hours but not after the last nap so maybe try it.

HappierTimesAhead · 18/04/2024 13:18

It doesn't make it any easier for you though @Babynaps ! I remember how hard it was with long stretches of time to fill and babies of that age get bored and irritable easily. It will pass though💗

alovelynight · 18/04/2024 13:27

My 1 year old went through a phase of doing this and has always slept through the night. She then moved into having 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour 30 min in the afternoon. She now has 30 mins in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon.
Wouldn't worry about it too much OP, you can't force them to nap! It will all work itself out.

Twocents · 18/04/2024 15:30

I'll trade you for my 9 month old that wakes 4-10 times a night lol 😂
