When to move into a toddler bed?

DS is 19 months old and sleeps generally ok - some split nights here and there or early wakes. He’s a pretty big boy and seems to be really against being in his sleep bag at the moment. Screams no no no when we put him in or when he wakes up and shouts off off please and grabs at it.
When is a good age to move to either
a pillow and duvet in his cot, or do that and move to a toddler bed? I worry he is maybe too young to get to grips with an actual bed as friends have only done it with theirs around age 2 and a half to 3ish.
Any advice appreciated!

You could try a toddler quilt or duvet in the cot.

You could do either from now. As the sleeping bag seems to be the problem I’d switch to a duvet now and stick with the cot. I’d only switch to a cot when they try to climb out. Which mine never did…at 3.5 I got sick of lifting her out to go to the loo so switched then, until that point she was quite happy in a cot. We stuck with the sleeping bags til gone 4 too cos she was happy 😂 but it’s fine to switch much earlier.

I think we switched at about 18months as ds was trying to climb out of his cot! Got a side rail thingy so there was only a small gap at the end to climb through so he couldn't roll out.

I'd try a toddler duvet and pillow in the cot. I keep mine in cots as long as possible. When they're too young for a bed, it usually results in bedtime battles as they don't get the concept of staying in bed. Also, there is a safety aspect to them being able to get out of bed at times in the night. If you're aware they can get up to all sorts!

I did the quilt and pillow around that age, I think just after 18 months. At first he wasn’t great at keeping it covering him but a year on he is now good at staying under the covers. You get a sleeping bag that has legs so it’s like a big onesie that some people use instead of a quilt if they come out of it. My little boy moved to a bed at 2 and a half. He could climb out of his cot by this point (had only just started a few weeks before). He stopped napping as soon as he moved to a bed, other than in the car, but if he sleeps/naps well I would delay a bed as long as possible! I think lots of people are in a rush to get them in a bed but I have no idea why

My dd is nearly 2 so watching with interest. She's still in sleeping bag and cot at the moment.

We are on night 3 of duvet and pillow in his cot. He woke up cold both nights and I had to go back in to cover him up. He seems to struggle with the pillow though, as he is a front sleeper… so I might take that away for a few nights while he gets used to it. How long did your LO’s take to get used to it all?

Mine went in a single bed at 2, with pillow and duvet.

Violettaa · 03/03/2024 21:49

I’d ditch the pillow.

We switched DD to a duvet when she hated the sleeping bag at a similar age. By luck it was the summer so didn’t matter when she took a while to work out the duvet. Could you crank up the heat in his room for a few days to give him a chance to work out how to re-cover Jim’s leaf before he gets cold?

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 03/03/2024 21:52

Stopped using sleeping bags around 17/18 months, and switched to a toddler duvet and pillow. She hated her legs being enclosed and still kicks her duvet off even now.

Went from cot to bed at just before 2.5 years. She wasn't trying to climb out of the cot and she's pretty small for her age but we could always hear her legs hitting the bars of the cot as she moved in the night. Also we wanted to do the bed transition well in advance of dc2 arriving.

12M into low bed with duvet and pillow. Neither DD ever fell out, and no issues with getting out etc luckily!

My daughter is coming up 5 and has had the pillow for almost a year and still doesn’t use it most nights. She starts on the pillow but gradually shuffles down so she’s sleeping flat. I’d just take it away if it’s bothering him, some kids clearly don’t need them!

You don't have to have the pillow. Maybe just try the duvet? You can get duvet clips too, I think I got them from JoJo maman Bebe - they go under the mattress and clip to one side of the duvet, top and bottom and helps it from moving around too much.

Try a tog sleepsuit rather than sleeping bag.
