Any tips for getting DS to feed for longer than five minutes in the night?

Any tips for making sure he gets a decent feed before falling back asleep? He tends to spark out again after five minutes. Then we try to wind him, put him down and ten minutes later he's awake again and often windy as well, but try waking him up or burping him before then and no luck! He's nine weeks old and has reflux (see other threads), and I think the short feed is leading to him not sleeping for a decent length of time.

A decent feed during the day usually lasts about ten-fifteen minutes.

TIA (Apologies if I don't reply to any responses, I have limited internet access this weekend)

could you wake him up a bit more by changing his nappy? also things like undressing him slightly, tickling his feet, have you tried that?

BellaBear · 24/03/2008 09:52

yes to tickling his feet! Will try more of that.

Am trying to avoid changing his nappy at night now he doesn't poo then (but would if necessary, obviously).

Thanks for replying

we used to change ds' nappy to wake him up even if it was just wet. second tickling and removing layers.

good luck.

I used to have to change my ds at night as was the only way for him to wake up enough to feed.

BellaBear · 24/03/2008 10:10

yes, may have to rethink the no changing at night approach. Pity, it was so exciting when he didn't do a poo at night the first time!

DS1 was like that with all his feeds, just snacking all day long. Im a reflexologist so decided to massage his feet while feeding, it really worked he feed a lot longer then went longer in between feeds and obviously seemed a more happier little chap for it. It doesnt have to be a proper massage to get results just a general massage will do

will try that thank you

we're usually lucky during the day of he goes longer than two hours from start to start

playing with their ears can also keep them awake.

i would think his reflux is waking him up. you would need to hold him upright for at least 20mins after a feed. you should be able to wind him gently as he drifts into a deep sleep on your shoulder.

i used to lower ds (who had terrible reflux) in stages. a few mins each at a lower and lower angle. any signs of waking or sqirming (which means the relux is affecting him) and i would lift him up a bit. after 10mins flat and sound asleep it was back into his crib.

try blowing softly on his face - works well with my dd

Tapping bottle with your nail

Blowing on them

Keeping a side light on

Sit them up straighter

Make the milk a bit cooler, room temp

Humm a slow tune

How one of these helps you

Hope one of these helps you.

thanks for your input!

(not sure how to make breast milk cooler though!)
