2.5 years: go to single bed or junior bed?

DS will be 2 + 1/2 in summer. He’s currently in a Joie travel cot so we’re thinking about the next steps for his bedroom. I know a lot of people say go straight to a single bed 90 x 190 cm but is that a bit overkill? I’m worried about my emotions, seeing my little baby jump from cot to big bed. 😭

I’ve noticed there’s a few toddler beds that are actually slightly bigger than a cot bed so about 170×40 cm. Does anyone have one of those and how long did it last you? I have an average kid, definitely won’t be tall.

Final question is did anyone have one of those beds that has the pullout drawer with a 9cm thick mattress? I think it’s for sleepovers / for parent to offer comfort, but is it just a gimmick? What are other things that I’m just not thinking about? he has a comfy reading chair in his room in case that is helpful https://monlitcabane.com/en/dakar/5923-33310-dakar-bed-70x160.html#/36-colour-natural_wood/104-drawer-with_1_trundle_bed/249-entrance-side

Dakar Bed 70x160

For a 70 x 160cm mattress. Two types of barriers available. Optional drawer & option to custiomise height off the floor.

My kids were totally happy to move in to a 'big bed'. I had rails attached initially. I wouldn't bother with a toddler bed.

Honestly our 2.5 year old is starting to need more room than the toddler bed (and her teddies)

Plenty of room in the length but it's the width. She turns over and hits the wall one side or the little railing on the other.

Way more choice of cute bedding for single size too and room for you to get in and snuggle

Single bed with roll out bar.

We went straight for a single bed but one that's flat to the floor. It's been great for him. He's 4 now so needs the space of a single bed, and he doesn't get a big bump if he rolls out 😂

We went straight to a single bed and it was fine. DD was around the same age and we didn’t even need a rail. If you have a cot that turns into a bed and no younger DC that needs it then that’s one thing, but it seems mad to buy a bed (not cheap!) that your DS will outgrow so quickly.

Okay thanks everyone this seems unanimous. Got to put practicalities over my feelings! just wondering if we should get one with a drawer for storage or a the drawer with pull-out mattress

We went straight to a small double, meant we could climb in with him during the transition and he will be able to keep the same bed for years to come!
