A question for co-sleepers!

Cosleeping is often touted as a way for the mum to get more sleep and I often see posters saying co sleep with a boob out and let them crack on. How do you do this in practise - don’t you get cold? What do you do about covers and bedding? Do you swap between sides/boobs or just wake up lopsided?! I’m currently co sleeping but I don’t feel like I’m getting more sleep and wake up so uncomfortable from having my body in strange position for most of the night. Please share your wisdom!

What about an open cot right by the bed?

Restingpotato · 24/01/2024 14:56

@Flyhigher Ah yes thanks, I did that with my eldest in previous house but I don’t have the space in my current house and baby has outgrown his bedside crib.

Hey fellow cosleeper 👋🏼 I’ve been cosleeping with my DD since she was about a week old. She’s now nearly 12 months. I definitely think I get more sleep this way (that’s not to say that some nights I don’t get much at all though!!)
Official guidelines are to have blanket no more than waist height. Now my LO is older and doesn’t sleep as close (she usually feeds and then rolls herself onto her side away from me) I do pull mine up and tuck them in. But when she was smaller I would often wear a cardigan or warmer top that can be kept away from her. I also put on a breast feeding vest underneath my button pjs so my stomach is covered and it’s easy to cover up if I notice she’s stopped feeding and I’m cold. I also have hilariously got a breathable walking long sleeve top I’ve cut two slits in where my nipples are for the really cold nights 😂 and wear this under my pjs sometimes.
Also as she is now sleeping further away from my as she’s got older I don’t always do the “cuddle curl” position and will sleep on my back. I wouldn’t have dared in the first few months but have done for a couple of months now.
In terms of feeding from which boob - I can stay on one side of her and feed from either breast (I have quite large boobs though so may not be practical for everyone) before I mastered this I would switch which side I lay on the bed (I’m on a floor bed). Although this would wake me up quite a bit so I learnt how to stay on one side. I think others may pick baby up and switch them onto the other side (see happy cosleeper videos on insta) this might be good to relieve getting stuck in one position all night!!
I hope some of that is helpful! But at the end of the day if it’s not working for you explore alternatives! Good luck xx

Also you can by adult sleep sacks as well. Think they may be pricey but worth a look - I think happy cosleeper has a link to get a discount!

I used to wear a breast feeding vest. Covers pulled up to my waist. I used to sweat in the early days of BF at night so never felt cold, especially cuddled up with baby. As for swapping sides, I learnt to feed "from the top deck" as it were. You feed from the boob that's nearest the mattress and then shift a bit so you're laying on the bottom boob and your top boob is accessible for baby. I got that tip from Olivia Lactation Consultant on Insta! Before that, I used to pull baby in to my chest and roll over with them on my chest and then snuggle them in on the other side to get latched on.

How old is the baby? I did things differently when my baby was smaller vs now he's closer to one year.

Thanks for the responses, the modified tops and adult sleeping bags made me chuckle. I’ll take a look at that insta account thanks @Brightandbreezey
baby is 7 months @TheBeesKnee can roll and is pretty chunky.
