Early nap droppers - how did you know they were ready?

We're on day 3 of no nap here. Not through trying on our part, but just how it's gone. First day was almost an accident - he fell asleep for 3 minutes in the car and wouldn't continue at home. Due to that he then slept in until 8.15 the next morning when we're normally up by 6.30! So that late lie in then resulted in no nap that day either. Today he again slept in until I went in to wake him at 7.20 to get to nursery around 8. Didn't nap there and we did bedtime early, usual time is 7-7.30, today he was asleep by 6.15.

Now, it's worked really well in that he sleeps through (but did already) and then we get a lie in and that's quite nice! Or an early bed which is also nice. But given he used to go down for his nap pretty easily and then sleep for a solid 1.5 hours I'm baffled by the overnight change. The nap had started slipping later - he used to nap 11-12.30 really reliably until Nov-Dec and since then it's been more like 11.30-1 and bedtime half hour later too. But still clearly needed the nap. Mind, we did have about 68 colds since September and 6 new teeth too, but now he's over all of that (for now) so that could be why?

He's only 20 months old, but has been on one nap (at the exact same time) since he was 10 months, and actually started that transition at 8 months. I've always just let him nap when he's tired instead of creating a schedule, but ever since the drop to 1 nap it just fell into a schedule.
