Hi everyone any advise, my partner and i have just had a baby boy 1 week old. He is amazing but wont sleep without us holding him. At night we do get about 2 hours then 2 40 minutes sleep, during the day we put him down after some signs he sleeps about 10 maybe 20 min and do it all again. We do leave him wimper for a bit but not full crying for long. We make sure he is fed winded and nappy clean. Do we just hold him for a bit longer and take turnes as we are getting very tired and im back to work soon. Sure this is all normal. Thanks

Completely normal, up until a week ago your baby was safe, warm, never felt cold or hunger before. Now they are adjusting it's all very familiar and you holding them makes them feel safe. It does get easier around the 8 week mark, look up the fourth trimester. Until then just try and persevere, it is hard so sending lots of hugs.

This is normal I'm afraid and while you might get lucky with a baby that doesn't stay in this pattern long, my son was a clingon and would only sleep attached to me until 16 weeks. It was exhausting, but 8 years on a very distant memory

just do shifts for now, so say you sleep in 3 hour chunks then let the other do the same. baby will sleep better in a couple of weeks

Congratulations! That's just what newborns are like. I definitely recommend shifts. Get through a load of netflix. I found it got more manageable around 4 weeks.

Do shifts and longer term get a wrap sling so that you can swaddle him close to you. It will save your sanity.

Brumbies · 19/12/2023 18:01

Get a baby sling and have your baby close to you, or your husband. This might help.

Thanks everyone good tips. Sling good idea and shifts make sense, and just try and put him down now and then i guess.

We did swaddling. Didn’t work immediately but eventually baby got used to swaddle in arms and then swaddle in the next to me. Took time and it nearly broke me but you’ll get there. I’m sorry. The exhaustion is so real.
