How to get baby to sleep in cot?

We are in the middle of transitioning our 6 month old into her cot and it isnt going great. Just looking for a bit of advice.

We have started with napping in the cot and it takes a few tries to get her down but she does eventually sleep. The evenings are worse.

She has her last feed and is read a story and it seems she is about to go to sleep. But as soon as she is put down she wakes immediately.
I have read being put to bed drowsy is best. But she just seems to go wide awake as soon as she is put down.

Does anyone havr any ideas?

Where has baby been sleeping?

CynicalSunni · 30/11/2023 20:44

Bassinet in our room or a carrycot which was generally during the day. But she definately too big for them now.

Cot didn’t work for either of mine. I left my second in an empty double bed and that worked fine but it’s probably not the safest option

CynicalSunni · 30/11/2023 20:48

Yea mine likes to roll to get to places so not great for mine.

Do you think baby feels cold or not cuddly enough if they're used to being in a smaller enclosure?

Have you used a sleep nest? I have the purflo one (I don’t work for them!) It is meant to be safe for overnight sleeping: it probably doesn’t adhere to the lullaby trust guidelines but a lot of babies just won’t sleep if you follow the advice there to the letter.

It could be that. The cot is a lot bigger than what she is used to. How do you tackle that?

I havent tried the nests because i did hear bad things. As you said the lullaby trust but also the HV and midwives. All very against having things in the cot.

So obvs a bit wary now

Though maybe day naps in the cot could work as i could keep an eye. Until she is used to it

DD hated the cot , my friend suggested putting her carry cot in the cot for a few days and after that she went in the cot with no problems

mumtoboys12 · 30/11/2023 21:08

So controversial as heard mixed things ...but for the nest (sleepyhead) to cot transition, I took the inside of the sleepyhead out (the long section) and put it UNDER the cot sheet. So he felt a bit more secure than just a huge cot. But it was safe, breathable sheet and he soon settled. Widened and widened it until I removed it around 8 months. Worked a treat. Sorry it's hard to explain unless you have a sleepyhead! X

Didnt think of that. Maybe will try it

Maybe try putting her down after her feed but before her story? Let her get sleepy in cot.

helimon · 06/03/2024 08:09

While it's often recommended to put babies down drowsy but subway surfers awake, every baby is different. Some babies may prefer to be almost fully asleep when placed in the cot, especially during the initial stages of transition.

Though it is generally suggested to lay babies down while they are drowsy but still awake, each baby has unique preferences. Some might feel more comfortable being nearly fully asleep when settled into the crib, particularly during the early phases of adjustment. avatar world

My baby would only go down properly asleep. Drowsy but asleep didn't work for us at all.

Longer wind down. Relaxing bath, dim lights, soft and minimal verbal interaction.

I did milk and short same lullaby as found stories at night could be a bit overstimulating.

Try her going in awake and sit quietly with her until she settles.

If you need to, touch her to comfort her, but don’t take her in and out of the cot, assuming she just needs to sleep.
