Going insane

My DS went to bed at seven and so far has already woken up five times. He just doesn't settle at night. I am wondering if he could be hungry - he's 20 weeks. My DH and I are going a bit mad with the number of times he is up during the night.

Try feeding - might be a quick solution (and DO NOT worry about habits just now!).

20 weeks a common time for sleep to go bananas. You have my sympathies - it's really hard. Do you feed him when he wakes? Have you tried co-sleeping?

Stefka · 11/03/2008 20:25

I do feed most of the times he wakes up unless I have just finished feeding him (sometimes he wakes up five or ten minutes later) in which case DH rocks him to sleep.

It is hard, Stefka, I do sympathise! Sometimes I think a lot of the things we do to try to change our babies' ways are simply things to keep ourselves busy while the baby changes her ways in her own sweet time...

My 20-week-old is exactly the same - it's driving me nuts! He's wide awake for hours at a time the middle of the night and though he'll go to sleep if I feed/rock him, the second I put him down in the cot, he's awake again. I've been at a total loss as to the reason why, as he feeds well and doesn't oversleep in the day time. Occasionally he wakes up crying really hard, or rather he isn't awake and we need to wake him to stop the crying. Have you had this too?

At least it's some reassurance to hear that we're not alone. And if it is something like a growth spurt, hopefully it will pass soon. Ideally by tonight!

In the meantime, any futher wisdom is very gratefully received...

Sometimes he screams in his sleep - it's quite disturbing. We wondered if it was wind or something. We are very tired. We can't get the boy to nap either unless we spend about an hour walking him up and down.

Same here with the naps. He used to nap in his cot, but now we have to rock him (with vigour!) to sleep in the pram.

Good luck for tonight - fingers crossed the phase will be over!

Some chance - last night was the worst. Hardly slept for more than a 20-min stretch from 12.30 onwards. How about you?

Stefka · 13/03/2008 09:17

Awful!!! He was up about 16 times. Even taking him into bed with me didn't help.

We're thinking of going the opposite way and moving him into his own room. I wanted to keep him in ours till six months but this is ridiculous. Even when he does finally get to sleep, I'm so on edge I can't sleep anyway so maybe if he wasn't in the room it'd be easier. It'll probably backfire though and I'll just end up traipsing further to feed/rock him every time he wakes.

Just out of interest, are you weaning yours at the mo? We started a couple of weeks ago and wonder if that might be a factor? I had hoped it would help him sleep better, but perhaps not.

Stefka · 13/03/2008 09:45

Not yet - I was hoping that starting that would help but haven't started yet. He's already in his own room and it does help a bit as we were waking each other up.
