8 month old nappy constantly leaking!

Hi everyone, hope you're all well.

My 8 month old baby (almost 9 months) has had leaking nappy every night for 2+months now and I'm exhausted. I've tried all brands, she weighs 7kg so she's size 3. I tried sizing up to size 4 still leaked and size 4+ for extra absorbancy and still leaked. I've tried 2 nappies like size 3 with a size 4 ontop or size 3 with a 4+ ontop, I leave her vest buttons open to allow nappy to expand, she sleeps at like 8.45pm at which time I change her nappy before she sleeps and then change it again quickly at 6.30am, but nothing is working she still leaks. It's not a leak from the back, she leaks from the sides. She definitely isn't size 2 as that would be too small, I don't know what to do! She has completely gone off milk so it isn't a matter of her drinking too much at night, health visitor says some babies do go off milk once starting solids. Anyways I'm having to give her a bath every morning and change her bedding as she wakes up soaked.

Have you tried doing a nappy change whilst she's asleep?

We've had occasional leaks since my DS has started sleeping through the night. I check him before I go to bed or if he starts stirring in the night/or I wake up by default. I can do a quick change whilst he's in his cot with minimal fuss without waking him and prevents the leaks.

Try nappy pants at night rather than taped nappies, with both of mine they worked better when the leaking was at the sides. May have to experiment again with sizing up vs normal daytime size when switching to pants.

Was going to suggest sizing up vests but as you've already tried leaving the poppers undone that may not make a difference.

Like PP's suggestion of a night time nappy change if you can manage not to wake her.

Hi thanks for your reply, I mean the thing is her nappies are also leaking daytime even though I change them regularly, like every hour or so because she's also had slight leaks from the sides during the day.

Try pull up nappy pants, and if these dont work on their own try a reusable cloth booster and a reusable waterproof nappy wrap on top.

I don’t even have children but it seems logical to me that nappy pants would help because they would have seams around the top of the legs, right? So the ‘gusset’ of the nappy should be held more securely. Maybe your DD is only getting leaks now that she’s older and more active but at the same time, sleeps longer so is on her back more and leaks can happen. Definitely try pants.

I've just had a look at pants online, seems like they start at size 4 which is 9-15kg which I'm worried would be too big for her as she weighs 7kg 😬

I don't really understand much about reusable cloths, would I put a reusable cloth booster inside the pull up and then the waterproof pant ontop? Also what brand would you recommend?

Hmm. I wonder if there are knickers for children her age that you could put over the nappy? I have no idea but if they do then maybe that would help?

CattingAbout · 30/10/2023 15:10

Pampers certainly used to do their baby dry pants in a 3 - not cheap but the best imo and normally on offer somewhere.

I'd just try the nappy pants on their own first, this solved the issue for us until DS was much older.

Yes - that's right, booster in nappy and waterproof cover on top. Any booster should do, would recommend Motherease waterproof wraps (expensive but you only need a couple).

Does she have skinny legs? I would just try a different brand as some are better for babies with skinny legs. The aldi own brand ones are good.

GinnyBee · 31/10/2023 11:32

Obvious question first: Are you definitely making sure all ruffles are out? Sorry if this is stupid, but I didn't know at first! And still sometimes if I'm changing in a hurry a bit stays folded in and it's a definite leak waiting to happen.

So she's leaking because of bad fit rather than the nappy being too full? Sounds like whatever brand you're using isn't snug enough, particularly around the legs. Mine wasn't exactly skinny but not a chunker either and I switched him to size 4 nappy pants overnight around 5-6 months old when in the day he was still in size 3 and they do fit a lot better around everything with the elasticated legs and waist. It's worth a try!

Immycho · 31/10/2023 13:15

Yes she does, so I think that is the cause for the wee leaks but I've tried so many brands and they just don't seem to fit snug and well around her legs plus getting really full and leaking!

Yes she's also like that, wouldn't consider her legs as skinny but they're also not chunky so I'm thinking the leaks are happening at the sides at the thighs. She's a size 3 daytime too so thanks for letting me know I'll give size 4 a go!

Make sure the ‘blast barriers’ inside the nappy are unstuck and sticking up, and that they straddle her gusset area properly. Make sure the frills arent getting caught back under the leg elastic. Make sure the velcro is snug.
