How to not keep hitting the snooze button?

I'm SO terrible for it. I even have to set my alarm an extra 30-45 minutes earlier than I need to be in order to allow myself snooze time, otherwise I'll just be late.

Really want to stop this habit so I'm hoping some MN wisdom may give me the kick up the bum I need!

That alarm looks great! I may need to look into getting one if the putting the phone on the other side of the room thing doesn't work so well.
I'm not so bad during the summer but finding the darker mornings a lot harder.

I do think I'm also my own worst enemy as I probably stay up far later than I should do. But I relish evenings to myself and so always cram in everything I want to do for myself after the kids are in bed even if it means staying up late!

I also wish DH would get pissed off at my constant snoozing and tell me to get the f**k out of bed 😂 but he bloody sleeps through them and it doesn't seem to phase him!!! I think if I knew it bothered him then that would defo help me get up!

What time are you going to bed? Are you getting enough sleep? Avoid caffeine after 2, no screens an hour before bed and white noise or a quiet room with black out blinds!

persisted · 09/10/2023 21:54

I get up at 5:30 every morning to run before work. Everything has to be set up the night before- kit laid out, work clothes sorted, lunch made.
Up and out the bed the moment the alarm goes off is the only way. The decision has been made, and this is what I do.
As soon as I get into the debate in my head I’m lost and won’t do it.

CharlotteBog · 09/10/2023 22:00

Yup, others side of the room.
I have to get up to turn it off and to stop DS2 telling me loudly "Mum, mum, mum, mum, MUM, MUM". Never do I feel more loved.

Donutofdoooooom · 09/10/2023 22:01

According to some "expert" on TikTok, you need to put one foot on the floor when you first wake/hear your alarm...doing this then gradually sliding out of bed is the best way apparently!

Those of you who have sunrise alarm clocks - which ones have you got?
@museumum
@SnuggleBuggleBoo
@RosesAndHellebores
I think I need one of these, as I’m also terrible at getting up.

Mine is a Philips, 'SmartSleep' I think, or something that looks like that. I have it on the other side of my bedroom and set my phone alarm for a couple of minutes before the sound on it, which I think is set for around 15 minutes after the 'dawn' starts. My phone is beside my bed so I can turn it off and chill for 2 or 3 minutes waiting for the Sunrise one, or just get up straight away and cut it off before it starts.

windywalk · 09/10/2023 22:28

That would break my heart being roused like that!

beetr00 · 09/10/2023 23:22

@windywalk agree, TOTALLY 😂

I have kept a flask of coffee next to my bed...I find just having a sip of that as soon as I wake really helps me

Great idea

TheCatterall · 09/10/2023 23:35

@Comedycook I love that idea you clever sausage. That’s me sorted. :)

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 09/10/2023 23:36

Fellow snooze button lover here.

But to be honest, the snooze button isn't the problem. You need to figure out WHY you are using it and the most obvious is that your body isn't ready to get up because you haven't had enough sleep?
Go to bed earlier.
Make sure the house is warm when you wake up so you aren't staying in bed because its cosier.

BabyFireflyx · 10/10/2023 00:49

I set 4 alarms. One for when I actually need to heave myself out of bed and three others at earlier five minute intervals. So I know I get 3 lots of 5 minutes and when the last alarm goes off I have to chuck my duvet cover straight off (more effective in colder weather). I don’t dare press snooze. With my glasses off in the dark I can fumble around to press stop low down on the screen for the first 3.

FebMama · 10/10/2023 05:07

I can confirm putting the alarm on the other side of the room seems to have worked 😱

I think naturally if I start waking up earlier I will want to go to bed earlier now too which will help. Plus I'll have some of my evenings back if I start exercising in the morning rather than the evening now. Let's see how long I can keep this up!

Thanks to those of you who recommended sunrise alarms too. I’ve found one on Amazon in their Prime deal!

Hooray! Enjoy your mornings :)

I second the recommendations for sunrise alarm clocks, though I just have a smart bulb in my bedroom that I set to fade on over the 1/2 hour before I need to get up. I also set it to come on at sunset and then get dimmer when I need to be going to bed as a bit of a reminder to actually go to sleep!

Cherryblossom81 · 11/10/2023 16:24

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best sunrise alarm clock. There are some Amazon prime day deals, but they all have very mixed reviews.

mathanxiety · 11/10/2023 16:30

When the alarm rings, peel.off your blankets even though you really want to pull them snugly around you and continue snoozing.

AlltheFs · 11/10/2023 16:30

I have a lumie, it does help a lot but it isn’t a magic cure.

I am still constantly late for work, still sit in all the shit traffic and have no parking because I don’t get up. DD is always late to nursery etc.

If you are not a morning person @FebMama I hate to be defeatist but it is incredibly unlikely you will sustain it. But the clock change in Oct is a great place to start. The additional hour makes transitioning easier!

To be fair to me I do have a parasomnia (went to Papworth for a sleep study) and I have abnormal REM sleep patterns which adds to my inability to wake normally.
