do you wake them up if they sleep into later afternoon - say after 4:30pm? ds goes down for a nap about 2 but sometimes he is sleeping until 5pm. he is not a good morning person and i fear he will be really grumpy if i wake him up before he is ready.

I used to wake DS, and now I don't let him sleep at all - cruel mummy that I am. He is almost 2.

Only reason is that it stops him sleeping at night, and I didn't like him being up until 9pm. If your DS still sleeps ok though, or if you don't mind him being up later at night, then you could let him sleep.

When I used to wake him (at 4pm usually), he was really grumpy, which is why I say no sleep at all now - he is grumpier than ever in the evenings, but at least he gets an early night!

Mine could nap for his country.

If he woke at 5pm, he would segue through tea, straight to bath, breakfast, teeth, story and bed. Sometimes within the hour .

I was lucky, because he was truly a creature of habit, and so once the bedtime routine began he would follow like clockwork.

It all depends on how your DS goes down at night I suppose.....

he goes down ok at night but he wakes quite early in the morning. BALD - if your ds had a nap til 5 and then went to bed at his normal time did he get up very early?

Nope

I am also very fond of sleep, could the two be connected?

Makes up for DS1 being up with the lark grr

what time does he wake? ds wake up about 6-6:30 but sometimes earlier. what's the latests he's ever woken up from a nap? i don't mind too much him sleeping til 5pm but if he sleeps later than that i fear we might have trouble getting him into bed, but then that's probably cos we don't have a routine. he just has his milk and goes straight to bed.

if DS isn't asleep by about 2, I try and keep him up now. I don't let him sleep for more than an hour either - there was a time when his naps were getting later and later, and longer and then his bedtime was getting pushed back. It's horrible to wake him up, but after 5 minutes he is fine and if I let him sleep he will nap 3-4 hours then be a complete nightmare to get to bed again.

Oooh. I've been wondering about this. My DS (19 months) can have a couple of hours nap in the afternoon and this can go on after 5. I have made a rule (to myself) not to let him have more than an hour and a half at the max. And I do wake him. This can go either way - he can be really grumpy and sometimes he isn't. I am a firm believer in In the Night Garden though as a soother for all troubles from 6.15ish! So far, it's seemed better to have him grumpy for the latter part of the day but go to bed at about 7.30pm and sleep through.

My DD is a nightmare to get to bed if she sleeps after about 3.30 in the afternoon. If she's at nursery she's like clockwork and sleeps an hour and a half until 2.30 and goes down pretty well at 7 ish. On the days she's home she naps for longer and is harder to settle so I've started to make naps at home a bit shorter and not draw the blinds etc so hopefully she won't sleep as deeply. I've found if she sleeps over two hours shes a nighmare if I wake her but if I rouse her before that she's not too bad after the initial grump. HTH (she's 18 months btw)

my three year old dropped his afternoon sleep the afternoon I came home from hospital with his brother! He will sometimes fall to sleep on the sofa late afternoon and as long as he wakes before 5pm will go into his routine and sleep at 7.30pm.
Will always be knocked out by the car.

nowwearefour · 09/03/2008 20:05

could you not put him down a bit earlier? i now put my 2.5 year old down at 12 and give her lunch after her sleep. she is now going down much better again and not waking as early....

nappyaddict · 09/03/2008 23:30

no cos he still has a morning nap so isn't tired until then.

DS2 stopped having a nap at 2 otherwise he just wouldn't sleep at night.
DD3 (14 months) has 2 hours in the afternoon then I wake her
