Am I mad to put 15 month old DS into a bed?

I keep hearing him in the night, crashing into the side of the cot and wailing.

He usually settles back down quickly, but I'm wondering if he'd benefit from a bit more space.

Or does the fact that he obviously thrashes around at night, mean he should stay in his cot for a bit longer?

He knows he can climb off beds as he plays on ours a lot.

If I did give it a go, I'd use a bed guard I think. He's a really good sleeper at the moment so I don't want to muck things up.

He also wears a sleeping bag at the moment - can I use this in a bed? Presumably if he got out of bed in it, he'd get in a right knot!!

Can someone share their experiences with me please, and tell me what you did!!

i put my ds's in beds around that age. we did have the lower bes though (little tikes car beds for them both, there room looked so cute!). then we put them in big boys beds at 2 xx

all mine have been in toddler beds by 12mths.
DD2 is 14mths and has been in toddler bed for 2mths now with no probs. Expect maybe the first couple of nights when they realise they are free they get up a lot but just keep putting him back into bed. Also stairgate either on top of stairs or on bedroom door works well.

mistressmiggins · 03/03/2008 20:41

both mine were in beds by 15 mths cos kept banging the cot in their sleep.
I had them in grobags & wasnt an issue
agree with Nemo that stairgate a top of stairs gives you peace of mind

neither of mine got up & wandered around

go for it

Didn't really want to buy a toddler bed, so it would probably be a normal single.

I could put pillows on the floor though,. just in case!!

Thanks for responses so far - it obviously can be done!

Put into a bed if you think he is ready
Use the mattress off your current cot as a bumper against the wall for him to snuggle into
We put a lock on the door when we moved him into a bed but that is not a choice for everyone. (A hook and eye lock which locks it about 7 inches open)

pedilia · 03/03/2008 20:43

Both my boys were in beds at that age

StressTeddy · 03/03/2008 20:43

we had a bedside but soon took it off as it created massive lumps under the mattress which we thought were very uncomfy
Just a couple of pillows on floor

I had to put DD in one by the time she was 13 or 14 months old, because she had mastered the art of climbing out of the crib. I got bunk beds, and when we put DS into a bed, only put together the top one, because it was low to the ground and had a double rail around the entire bed except for where the ladder went, and then we put her in that one, and put together the bottom one for him, and he slept in that one. She is now 2 1/2, and gets out of bed sometimes, but never to the extent she did when she was in her crib. We bought her her own bed, and will give DS both parts of the bunk bed in a year or so.

Agree about not wanting to buy a toddler bed. I didn't want to pay that much for something that would only be used a few years.

Hi Jojay, I started a thread much like this one a few weeks ago here

DD got put in her bed the following friday and it was fine until sunday night when she got up at 4am and started running round her room then crashed into a wall and went ballistic (as you would!). Next night she got up at 5am and walked into our room and next night she was back in the bloody cot

It is all very well thinking you will just keep on putting them back to bed but at 4/5am you just don't have the energy. Sorry to be a bit negative!

Jojay · 03/03/2008 21:01

Thanks Mesaloca - I knew i'd seen a thread on it somewhere but I couldn't find it!

That's a shame it didn't work out for you, and interesting to know that it can go wrong.

Hmmmm........

give it a go Jojay, you can always go back to the cot. DD is still sleeping in her bed in the day and enjoying it so the bed isn't going unused.

BITCAT · 03/03/2008 21:27

no i don't think your mad, my dd2 has been in a bed from about 12mths. This was a small low toddler bed and only because she didn't seem to sleep well in the cot and used to climb in with her older brother and slept pretty much all night. Did the trick and meant i got a good nights sleep!! She is now 2.2yo and sleeps on bottom bunk with dd1 at top and manages fine!! Go for it, you can always go back to cot if it doesn't work for you!!
