Putting baby into sleep bag - am I being daft?

Hi all, currently moving baby into sleep bag rather than tucked in blanket. But I’m struggling with the logistics šŸ˜‚
We have a Tommy tippee one (I won’t be using the swaddle aspect) is it best to get her in it before she’s settled and asleep and then just keep her in it?

We don’t have much of a routine as she’s only 9 weeks, other than she falls asleep at about 11, hopefully! each night.

I worry about her getting hot in it if I’m feeding her etc in it, but equally if I wait until she’s asleep and lie her down to zip up she will wake up (fighting a battle with getting her to sleep off us also)

Help!

I only ever put DS in it awake and let him fall asleep in it. Far too disruptive to try and put them in them when they're asleep! She would only need a 0.5-1 tog max in this heat (depending on where you live)

thelma57 · 11/09/2023 17:41

Thanks @TeddyBeans we have a 1 tog and will be putting just a long sleeve vest on with it.

Will get her into it last nappy change closest to bed time I think then!

Put it on before final feed then cuddle feed and hopefully they'll fall asleep in it

Put in a lightweight one if temp drops put a blanket over, obv ensuring feet to bottom of cot etc

Spinningcats · 11/09/2023 17:48

Pretty warm for a sleep bag today if you’re in UK. I’d wait till temp drops.

thelma57 · 11/09/2023 17:56

Ahh do you think @Spinningcats I’ve just been going by the guidance on the TT website for each bag. It’s set to be around 15 degrees over night here and the room is generally about 22?

I’m no expert but over heating a small baby isn’t good so I’d just leave it a week or two till we’re all freezing if it were me. Maybe over-cautious though!

thelma57 · 11/09/2023 18:05

No you’re probably right @Spinningcats i’m the same which is why I’ve been reading their guidance loads, but thinking about it now I might wait. Gives her the option to boot the blanket down if she needs!

Hi I have several different sleeping bags of different togs for my baby.
You can get a really light one made of same material as muslin cloths, so less than half a tog. But based on your temp of the room 1tog and vest is perfect. Plus baby will be in the same room as you I assume. This is what we did baby was in sleeping bag from day 2.

Spinningcats · 11/09/2023 18:55

My daughter is 8 now but looking back we were told not to use them until 6 months. Has that changed?

elm26 · 11/09/2023 19:36

Hi OP

My DD is 16 weeks and just been sleeping in a nappy and vest for past couple of weeks. On the really hot nights where our room is 23+ I've left her in just a nappy with a large thin muslin tucked in (she usually kicks it off anyway).

I'd just be careful about overheating, it can be really dangerous. I've got three sleeping bags that DD hasn't been in yet lol but hoping October brings cooler temperatures at night.

thelma57 · 11/09/2023 20:36

Thanks all. @elm26 babe had just been in a vest the past few nights when it’s been really hot (25 in our room!) but it’s been much cooler today, that said it does feel stuffy now!

Will skip the sleeping bag for now and wait until it’s slightly cooler. I’d rather her to too cool and let me know!

I'm not sure why people think babies will be too warm in a 1 tog bag? I'm using a 10.5 tog duvet which is just right, sw England.

Spinningcats · 11/09/2023 21:20

@gogomoto you are not a baby. Their relative body size to the covering means they need a lower tog so as not to overheat. Plus babies can not control their own temperature. You should never use over a 4.5 tog duvet until a child is much much older.

How do people have children and not know this basic safety stuff!

Babies can't kick the blanket off. Babies below a couple of months old can't even sweat efficiently. If they overheat they van get extremely ill very quickly and without showing much signs of warning.

If they get too cold, they'll cry. If they get too hot, they can go faint and not be able to even cry to let you know. It's a big SIDS risk.

Never put a 10.5tog blanket on a baby, ever. It should be 0.5, 1 or 2 tog unless it's winter and you don't have much heating on, in which case I'd still not go for more than 3.5tog.

hellohelp · 11/09/2023 23:43

Is it not to do with baby wriggling out of the neck when they're so small? I think that's why I waited until ds was 6mo
But I could be totally making that up as I was in baby dog for a very long time

Spinningcats · 12/09/2023 09:09

@hellohelp I can imagine being inside a baby dog must have confused things šŸ˜‚

hellohelp · 12/09/2023 09:40

Omg @Spinningcats didn't even notice that šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
Baby FOG
For easiness we'll just say I had baby brain for a longgggg time

But we're not talking about a 4.5 tog duvet are we. It's a 1 tog sleeping bag...

neleh87 · 12/09/2023 09:52

You can get smaller sleeping bags now, from tommee tippee etc. I think they're safe from 8lb. My DS is 5 months and has been in one from about 6 weeks.

Love my sleeping bags! There's lots of charts online for what to put baby in depending on temperature.

I put DS sleeping bag on him as part of his nighttime routine. Fresh nappy, vest or sleep suit, sleeping bag. Then feed and sleep. Obviously it doesn't fall off him so you just put baby down with the sleeping bag still on. It can be a good sleep cue.

Writerscompanion · 13/09/2023 15:03

Look for one with underarm poppers which can be done up for smaller babies to avoid wriggling down.
