2 to 1 transition help

My 15 month old is, I think, needing to transition from 2 to 1 naps. If he sleeps in the morning he doesn’t sleep again in the afternoon, unless we’re in the car. He will scream and fight most naps at the moment, cot or buggy.
However, he cannot make it beyond 10/10.30 in the morning. But even if he only has 20 minutes then, he won’t go again. I’ve tried as late as 3.30 pm and he still won’t, unless I go for a drive.

How do I tackle this?! If he sleeps 10.30-11.30 he won’t make it to bedtime but I can’t drive every day for a nap. Please help.

What time is he waking from his night sleep and what time is he going to bed?

Nollie12 · 11/08/2023 14:54

Goes to bed at 7, normally wakes up around 6.40 ish, sometimes closer to 7 :)

If a day of awful naps we go more like 6.45pm.

Oh and he sleeps through - which I’m very grateful for after months and months of very awful sleep up until 1 😂

I would go for the one nap and push the time he's going down for it by 15 mins every few days until you hit your desired time.

My son went down anytime from 11:30 for his one nap.

It can be abit of a rough few days adjusting but I much preferred the one nap!

Ok yes that sounds sensible. I don’t think he’ll go for very long at first until he gets used to it, so for instance if I put him down say 10.45 I think he’d probably do max an hour. Do I just risk an early bedtime and hope for the best and assume the nap will lengthen 😂🙈

It's really hard, really you need to try and keep him going till about 11 probably and then let him have a couple of hours. It's a bit of a pain for doing things and lunch but you can probably start to gradually push it back so you can do an early 11.30 lunch then bed at 12 in time. It probably is going to be a bit of trial and error. Groups in the morning are useful for keeping them going or a park trip as when out and about they can often keep going longer I find.

@Percypiglover i think I can probably push him til 11 then over time get later but he only really does 45 mins / max an hour so that’s a long stint til bedtime. Do you just do early bed for a bit then hope the nap lengthens slowly?

Honestly mine always slept well for naps (dc2 rubbish night sleeper but fab Donal sleeper) hit I would be tempted to put to bed earlier if they are tired. Also might be worth putting them to bed in buggy if they will go and then when they start to stir see if you can rock them back to sleep to make nap last longer. Sometimes getting. The past the sleep cycle will mean a longer nap
