Do some children just not need as much sleep?

I know all DC are different. However DD has never 'slept well' or certainly not text book. I remember she dropped all naps before the age of 2. When she started school I remember all the school mums saying how fast their DC got to sleep in the first few weeks. DD was the same as always not going to sleep until past 9.
She is now 6 I put her to bed at 8pm. I have just had a look in her room (it's 9.39pm) she is still awake. She has basically lay there for almost two hours not able to sleep.
I have tried everything I make sure she doesn't have screen time/ nothing sugary before bed. A relaxing bath a bed time story. She often complains how going to bed is boring which I can understand if she is lying there for 1/2 hours. It's like she can't get to sleep. She normally wakes up 7.30 absolutely fine and she does not seem tired during the day.
Could she just not need the sleep? It doesn't seem right for me to just give up and let her go to bed at 9/10 pm at her age but effectively that is what is happening.
Anyone else?

Yes. DS always needed less than my friends DD. It was very confusing when they were little. Used to it now.

If it's not affecting behaviour, concentration etc then she probably just needs less sleep than other children.

Audio books are the answer!

Yes, both dc sleep less than many of their peers we know. No matter what you do they'll wake early. Both now diagnosed with ADHD and the psychologist said it was a classic symptom/sign.

Yes my 8 year old is often awake in his room till gone 10pm and wakes up around 6am, earlier than both his (younger) siblings. Thankfully now he's older he goes downstairs to watch TV. He's full of energy, plays lots of sports, seems to not be struggling to concentrate at school so I've just decided he doesn't need much sleep.

In studies they do find people who only need 2 to 4 hours and others need 8 to 10. Most adults are 6 to 8, I'm def closer to 8 and my husband to 6 naturally. Lots of CEOs need little sleep so maybe she'll be rich. Saying that I never slept as a child.

her bedtime is too early. let her play quietly for another hour.

Yes. My 3 year old sleeps absolute Maximum is 9pm-6.30am. Often it’s more like 10pm-6am, with several wakings.

I asked the paediatrician who said it’s perfectly normal, and very few children need the spoken about 12hrs. 8- 10 hrs is more normal

DS slept 2 hours in 24, and not in one go. I conceded that if he didn't sleep fine, but I neither wanted to see him or hear him. He quietly played, drew or when I little older read in bed.
He works long shifts now, often split shifts too.

Exactly. No one is a one size fits all.
I need as much sleep as a child, if Im honest! Anything less than 9h and Im not a nice person!

@sleep15783 if shes fine, just push her bedtime by an hour. It might make it less boring, if she goes to bed when shes ready to sleep!

Thingsthatgo · 04/08/2023 13:42

It'll probably be a blessing when she's an adult. I would love to need fewer hours sleep - I could get more done/have more fun!
