9 week old waking early

Hi all, my baby is 9 weeks old and is in the habit of waking early in the mornings.

We start bedtime at 7pm, he goes to sleep at about 8pm and tends to wake up around 1/2am to feed. He then typically wakes up again at about 4:30am and I shush him back to sleep. He then wakes again at around 5:30 and after feeding will be awake for the day.

i just wondered if this is normal due to his age? Or is there something I should be doing to make his wake up time later? I read that he should be going 8pm to 8am??

in my experience they are all different. I think what’s important is the routine not the time it’s done. We did our routine later when DC got up earlier and then brought it forward as they were sleeping longer and brought it forward again when all daytime naps were dropped.
Take everything you read with a pinch of salt, I think it’s more a case of trial and error to find what works for you and baby, don’t worry if they don’t fit the ‘textbook’ baby. I also applied this approach to any advice given, both solicited and unsolicited. It does sound as though your LO is getting into a good pattern. Good luck OP

At 9 weeks that’s completely normal. He’s doing very well only waking at 1am and 4.30am, lots wake a lot more than that at that age!

Loverofoxbowlakes · 22/07/2023 07:24

At 9 weeks mine were both completely upside down and getting up time was not even a thing. ie we could start the day anywhere between 3am and midday.

I think you need to lower your expectations op, most babies are not in any sort of rigid routine by 9 weeks (even if you try it, they are very unpredictable).

Mine is 18 months and has the same routine. Would agree with PP about lowering your expectations of a 9 week old!

Mutabiliss · 22/07/2023 07:29

At nine weeks they don't really have a routine, it's just 'what they're doing right now'. It will change. Pay attention to wake windows rather than the clock.

drpet49 · 22/07/2023 07:30

Why are you putting your 9 week old baby in a rigid routine? Get a grip for goodness sake.

9 weeks? Not months?

You have a baby that practically sleeps through. Whoever is telling you 8pm-8am at this age is full of shit.

Both of mine slept through from early on. DS2 slept through from 9 weeks old. But it was like 10pm to 6am. The 12 hour sleep is when they are older. Like 6-12 months.

Tiredjoanna · 22/07/2023 07:34

Believe me I'd have killed for a night like this at that age. 8-8 is absolute crap for this age, mines 10mo and don't sleep as well as yours. Probably more like 6+ months when they supposedly start sleeping through

This they can't do the 10-12 hour until on solids. I would suggest bringing bedtime earlier (6:30-7) and then doing a proper " dream feed" around 10-11pm make sure they are properly awake for at least 45 minutes- 1 hour at that time, change their nappy then hopefully you will get get one short wake between midnight and 6am. This is also the ideal time to introduce a bottle of formula or expressed milk and get your partner to give it,if you have one.

Mutabiliss · 22/07/2023 07:35

Oh hang on, you mean you've read a nine week old baby should sleep 8-8? They don't do that. Mine was a really good sleeper but he started doing 11-5 at 10 weeks and that was really amazing. He's never slept 12 hours, more like 10.5 or 11.

My toddler is 2 years and 3 months and your baby sleeps better than her 😂

ShadowPuppets · 22/07/2023 07:41

The day ‘starts’ whenever you choose at this point! Mine used to wake at 5.30 but I’d sit in bed with them with a tea, they’d drop back off around 8 and I’d enjoy the quiet until they woke before ‘starting’ the day at 9/10. If it’s your first, sitting in bed til mid morning with them is one of the good bits 😁

Pumpkinbumkin200 · 22/07/2023 07:42

Do you go to bed with baby at the same time then? Mine didn't really begin to have a bedtime routine until 6 months when he was left alone in the bedroom because of SIDS. Before that, he used to snuggle and snooze on us on the sofa and went to bed whenever one of us headed up. Sounds like he's doing very well!

Omma23 · 22/07/2023 23:24

Have you tried using black out blinds? With sunrise so early at this time of year it can make baby think it’s day time. This might prolong the sleep and make him go back down. Otherwise, when he wakes at 4:30 are you able to feed him and get him back down then rather than waiting until 5:30 as it may be early enough to convince him it’s still night time and to settle down again for another few hours.
