Has anyone bought an Amby baby thingy and regretted it?

amby baby thingy

Am wondering about getting one, dd2 is actually an ok sleeper. Can't easily get a cot in our room though (its an access problem-long story-baby nest WOULD work though)

But it is a lot of money

Thoughts?

filly - we loved ours. dd (10 mths) has now moved into her big cot in own room but the nest was fab. it is alot of money but they do keep their value if you want to sell on. it was handy as a travel cot also.

Fillyjonk · 25/02/2008 13:22

I need want someone to tell me it doesn't live up to the hype and thusly i should not buy it

ok then filly. it is pants, ugly and gives babies seasickness.

Fillyjonk · 25/02/2008 14:55

But I can SEE that it is not ugly

is it really worth £150? I could buy...ohh...lots of chocolate for that.

i know the £150 is a big investment but the way i looked at it was i could probably resell for about £100. i would have spent £30- £40 quid on a moses basket and more as well on a travel cot - so i actually saved money in the long run.

well - the sums seemed to make sense at that the time

verylittlecarrot · 25/02/2008 15:10

I bought one, it's a thing of beauty. Pristine, in fact, as babycarrot has always refused to sleep anywhere other than welded to my boob.

No good if you have a velcro baby.

its a real shame that there isnt somewhere you can hire them from - loads of people want to try them but struggle with the outlay. we have a waiting list of pg friends who want to borrow ours now that dd is moved out of it.

MrsBadger · 25/02/2008 15:59

much prettier but even more expensive
could you buy just the cradle bit for £99 and put a hook in a ceiling joist?
or a different sort of hammock?

(why did I have you down as a cosleeper though?)

lots of useful info

mrsB we are cosleepers, that is kind of the problem-we have 2 older kids (2 and 4) who are used to coming into the bed whenever they want, but are not really aware enough to share a bed with dd2. But dd2 does sleep, at least for short stretches, so my plan was to find her somewhere safe to sleep and then we could let the older kids back into the bed.

I wonder about the "different sort of hammock" though...

Aaargh I do not know what to do, i have never had a sleeping baby before...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but we love our Amby hammock. Do quite a bit of travelling, so it's fantastic to be able to put it up and down in about 2 mins. And our dd sleeps like a dream init.

How old is dd2 though? As you can only use them until about nine months.

unicorn · 26/02/2008 07:36

We didn't like it (omg! feel like the emperors new clothes)- maybe we hadn't adjusted it properly but it didn't feel solid enough for ds.
He kept tipping over to the side and wasn't happy in it. I think it was originally for premmie babies wasn't it? Ds is rather a solid thing and this just seemed to flimsy.

They do resell though so even if you don't get on with it someone will have it.

Fillyjonk · 26/02/2008 08:36

dd2 is 2 weeks

but she weighs about 9 lb-very much not preemie...

Haven't read the whole thread but I got given mine by my sister, whose ds hated it and ds never ever settled in it.

I hope I have another so I can try again, it just looks so appealing!

Tallis · 26/02/2008 08:50

My dd is now 18 weeks and she's still swinging contentedly at 12lb. She was only 6lb 10oz at birth and I wondered actually if she was too light for it - it's almost better when they have a bit of weight on them because they ''self-bounce'' (whether deliberately or otherwise) more effectively. Anyway, she slept through the night from four weeks.

I guess it's like everything - babies each to their own, as Unicorn has discovered. I've put a sheepskin on top of the mattress for dd to lie on and she snuggles in very happily. No way for her to tip on her side. You can easily adjust the ruching (sp?) gathering in the material of the hammock if either their head or feet are too high, or they seem to be tipping sideways.

TillyScoutsmum · 26/02/2008 08:50

More bad news... mine loved hers and she was almost 10lb at birth (pic on profile of dd looking v. comfy )...

DP moaned about getting her into it once she was asleep - but he's a cack handed sod and I always managed ok

Fillyjonk · 26/02/2008 08:54

ok am off to measure up space next to the bed

OP posts:
Tallis · 26/02/2008 09:24

If it looks as if it's going to take up the whole space, the hammock+frame is light enough that you can pull it up next to your bed when it's time to sleep and easily shunt it out of the way when not...

not that i'm trying to persuade you or anything

moocowme · 27/02/2008 10:19

ds loves his and i can get him to sleep and nap in it very well without breaking my back (like we did when away without it!)

i have mine right next to the bed and sometimes just need to give it a little bounce to get him of to sleep again, which is good as i can do this while semi asleep.

been wonderful having it and would definitely try it again if i ever had another sprog.

FloriaTosca · 27/02/2008 10:30

Sorry...I LURVE mine....so does ds thank heavens!
It reduced his colic... I bounced him back to sleep in it..he now bounces himself (5 months 17ish lb)...they can't roll over in it so making them sleep on their backs isnt an issue...it pulls right up to the bed one handed at night and pushes out of the way just as easily...easily washable, very portable, and resale value is pretty high.

ps I got mine NEW off e-bay for £115..shop around
