I have just noticed that, apparently, dummies reduce the risk of SIDS...

study

more stuff

I had utterly missed this

Advice to breastfed babies seems to be establish bfding FIRST, and give dummmy only after about a month.

Here is what is confusing me. Most bf babies I know do seem to go to sleep while feeding. Surely a dummy falls out of the mouth once the baby falls asleep anyway. Thusly, I am confused as to whether a dummy makes a difference to a bf baby who is being fed to sleep.

(and my god I do NOT want to use a dummy)

There was a thread about this recently Filly - I think it got a little heated which may be why people are ducking
will rummage for you and post link.

here it is looks like all ended well

How is your lovely girl?

I also find it confusing. Neither of my babies would accept a dummy, and if the next baby doesn't want one, am I supposed to persevere and force them to accept it?

I think what it is is that a baby who falls asleep with a dummy in the mouth doesn't fall as deeply asleep. Every time the mouth relaxes a bit (thus letting the dummy slip) the baby wakes up a bit and resumes sucking. This process is in theory repeated all night, preventing the baby from entering a deep sleep wherein it may 'forget' to breathe.

You could replicate this by sleeping next to your baby with your boob 'plugged in' all night.

I have no idea how big an impact on SIDS this is likely to have.

does that link work? I can't make it do so - will try again......second go
