4 am wake up

My two-year-old DD wakes up at 4 am every day and it is killing me.

for context she used to wake at 5:30am which was manageable but since we came back from holiday in 2 months ago, she has been waking up at 4 am.

She goes to bed at any time between 7 to 8 pm however, sometimes it is later like last night it was 8:30 pm. She won’t sleep any earlier. Someone told me to put her to bed later, but it has made no difference over the course of the past few weeks. She just wakes up at 4 am. Usually it is 4:22 on the dot.

She naps for 1.5-2hrs during the day. She manages to stay awake until about 1 pm most days.

her room is dark. There isn’t a noise waking her up. It’s almost like it’s a bad habit she can’t break. The added complication is that in the past two weeks she was getting out of her cot so we have put her in a toddler bed for her own safety. This means that when she wakes up, she comes to the gate by her door and screams her head off.

I have a gro clock have been using it for the past two weeks. I have set it to wake at 5 am to encourage her to be quiet at least until then but it doesn’t seem to be making a difference.

When she cries, either me or DH will take it in turns to go in and sit by her door, trying to encourage her to go to sleep. I am still breastfeeding her, so I will give her a feed to keep her quiet so she doesn’t wake the older DS.

Please help me I don’t know what to do. I’m at breaking point. I am tempted to set the grow clock for 6 am and just let her cry by the gates until then but I don’t know if this is the right thing to do. The lack of sleep is affecting my physical and mental health. I do go to bed earlier but by the time she is asleep, I only have about an hour to sort out the house, let alone finish off any work or do anything I want to do.

Cut nap to 30 mins

PurplePetalPip · 24/07/2023 05:07

Hi OP, how are things now? Just wanted to say I'm in exactly the same position. DS turns 2 in a couple of weeks and is consistently awake around 4:20am. We've been using a gro clock but he pays no attention to it! I've been leaving him in his crib until 4:30 with the hope I can gradually push it back but he still wakes up before then.

I guess the next thing is to cut his naps as he's still napping for 2 hours. He will be moving rooms at nursery when he is 2 so will be with older kids so I'm going to ask that his naps are cut then to 1 hour maybe and see if that changes anything.

It's awful though isn't it? Is there a grandparent or anyone who could have your DD overnight every so often for you to get a lay in? We haven't done any sleepovers yet but I'm hoping my parents will have DS soon.

@PurplePetalPip i wish I could tell you things are better but alas they are not. We have cut the nap to 1hr but some days she refuses to nap and some days only 30/40mins and she was still waking up around 4ish. She has in the past few days marginally improved to 5am wake ups so that's something but it is hit and miss. Last night she went to bed at 10pm and still woke up at 5am and only napped for an hour during the day.

What are you doing at 4 am when she wakes up? You mention a bf and sitting by her door?

Fouramclub · 24/07/2023 13:49

@SleepingStandingUp now we take turns to go in her room and lie down next to her bed and pretend to sleep in the hope that she too will lie down and sleep. Sometimes it works. Usually it doesn't and she potters about until about 5am then she demands milk or something to eat. We go to her because we have DS 4 and don't want her to wake him up and have two over tired kids. It's a small home and she's very loud 😂

So sorry to hear things haven't improved! I'm resigned to getting up at 4:30 for the time being - it's madness! I'm just clinging to the hope that it won't last forever. Perhaps things will improve with potty training, transferring to a big bed, when naps go completely... and if not there is always the fact that when they are 4 or so they will be old enough to understand they have to play by themselves until the rest of the house is ready to wake up!

We had exactly the same situation with our 2 year old too. The only thing that worked was going in, making no eye contact, saying 'it's still night time and not time to wake up yet', laying them down and closing their door and not going back in. The key is being really consistent and doing this every morning. first 2 mornings there were tears and didn't go back to sleep, 3rd morning we cracked it and they went back to sleep after crying for a few mins. That lasted about a week and now they sleep until 7!! It's a game changer!

Cleotheclimber · 24/07/2023 22:30

I agree to cut the nap completely and also agree about going in and being really strict just saying it’s still sleep time tuck back in and walk straight out. It might wake up the older child (although im always surprised at how little my two wake each other up!) for a few days but will settle and nip the problem in the bud.

the other thing we tried when my 2 yr old did this was make sure my dh put her down to sleep as much as i did. We were in a bad routine of dh settling the 4yo and myself the 2yo that the 2yo only wanted me for everything and was waking early because she was getting separation anxiety. Pretty much As soon as we made sure to alternate bedtimes she became more relaxed about it and slept much better.

solidarity to you though it nearly killed me the early wake ups!!!

I'm not judging you for going to her. I do the same with my three year olds. They always demand a drink first so I get a drink, have a wee, go back and make myself comfortable on the floor and cuddle them back to sleep. Mostly it works.
