Forgetting to breath!?

Has anyone come across this before?
As I'm nodding off in bed I feel as though I'm forgetting to breath and then I suddenly wake up and feel a little dizzy. It's come out of nowhere, it's happened a few times over the last 2 weeks I'd say, now it's starting to worry me. I mentioned it to DH and he said it sounds like anxiety but I'm not a person who generally suffers with anxiety.
I'm going to contact GP today anyway but just wondered if anyone else experienced this and what you've done about it?

This sounds it might be sleep apnoea (although I am not a health professional so I'm not qualified to give a qualified judgment) But it is a recognised medical condition. I'd only heard of it today when reading the BBC News website headlines which said President Joe Biden has had this for a number of years. Definitely worth a visit to your GP but if that is what it is it seems it is not uncommon and is treatable.

I came on to say sleep apnoea as well. My husband has it. If GP agrees he will refer you to a respiratory clinic, they will do a sleep study and if appropriate give you a CPAP machine. Just sharing my experience - GP will know better. Good luck with the appointment.

I have sleep apnea and used to snore like a train before my cpap and has episodes of waking up literally gasping for air which felt really scary. It is easily controlled with a CPAP though as long as you use it every time you sleep
What did the GP say ?

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 29/06/2023 17:43

@Sussexcricket the GP doesn't think it's sleep apnea. After asking a lot of questions she has related it to hayfever 🤷‍♀️ said my airways must be inflamed and is interfering with my breathing when I'm in my most relaxed state. Said if it was sleep apnea it would be affecting me through the night (which it's not, it's just when I'm drifting off) once I eventually fall asleep I tend to sleep right through til DS wakes me in the morning.
She reckons once my hay fever subsided then so will this breathing problem.
I do hope so.
It's just a scary feeling! 😟 I feel as though my breathing is shallow but maybe I'm over thinking it now!? I don't know 😩
Hope I've not been fobbed off. Will see how I get on I suppose

This happens to me randomly about once a year, always when falling asleep. I’m not scientist (as you can tell from my rubbish description) but my guess is that it’s when the brain is moving from awake state to sleeping state and there is a bit of a blip in hand-over! A bit like that jerk awake thing that sometimes happens.
