Should I wake 1 week old up in the night to feed?

Our DD is 1 week old. She is formula fed and is having 120ml each feed and finishing the bottle so might start giving more. She feeds well in the day sometimes the gap can be 3/4 hours sometimes it’s 2-2.5 hours until she wants her next bottle.

She is sleeping long stretches at night last night had her last bottle at 8.30 and was awake happily until around 22.00. She then slept until 3.30 and hadn’t had a bottle in between she didn’t even fully wake just stirred I then changed her nappy and gave her a bottle. she then woke up again at 7.40 for another bottle.

Is it ok to leave her to sleep the long stretches at night or should I be waking her to feed? She is a good size and was born at 9.7lbs and when had 5 day appointment she had gained weight.

Why would anyone wake a sleeping baby? Make the most of it - this probably won’t last. She is obviously having enough to eat if she can sleep for a long stretch. Most of the posts on here are about how to get a baby to sleep. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I think the only recommend waking to feed if there are medical reasons eg prem or jaundice. Worth just double checking with the midwife though

Being awake that long at 1 week old seems quite a lot so maybe they just needed the extra sleep.
It's a tough one because you want them to wake a bit more frequently in the early days to stop SIDS but if they're gaining weight fine then it could be worth leaving them.
I'd speak with your midwife and/or HV to make sure they're happy with baby being left to sleep for longer stretches.
It's likely to be fine but always worth double checking when they're so young.
You could be very lucky that you have a baby that likes to sleep but at 1 week old there is the risk that they're not waking themselves when they're hungry or have a full nappy.

I think they say only to wake them if they haven't regained their birth weight. That is a really long time for a one week old to be away for (my 8 month old struggles with 3.5 hours sometimes!) so she was probably just tired

They’re all stalky quite sleepy fir the first 10 days. At her weight, I’d leave her.

Please check with a professional not randoms on the internet! 🤦🏻‍♀️

😂 😂 😂 OP only a first time Mum would ask if they should wake a happily sleeping baby. No, you never want to wake a baby happily sleeping in the night. Just be very grateful 🙏 and get your sleep.

Don't wake a sleeping baby! Enjoy!

GracePalmer33 · 16/06/2023 10:03

I would leave to sleep. She's drinking a lot by the sounds of it. Enjoy!

I'd ask the professionals not on the Internet.
Personally l would wake her.. but saying that know nothing about bottle fed babies.. l breast fed for two years ..as did my daughter with her three. .. so obviously that's on demand and every hour or so.
